Any other ska fans here?

Rediscovering my high school and ska roots. Have a few ska covers posted but I would really like to have a go at Less Than Jake: All My Friends Are Metalheads… not sure how to approach this beast of a song.

I barely know what Ska is, sorry.
English Reggae? :japanese_goblin:

Ska came before reggae. Its reggae at 2-3x the tempo with horns and keyboards.

I like ska, it’s very punk adjacent.

It’s basically Punk mod reggae.

Which reminds me that I am still kinda bummed about Ranking Roger; I always liked him and Dave Wakeling.

“Mirror in the Bathroom” may be a better example of ska but always loved this one more, despite it being more new wave pop.

Radio tune…
Much of the ska era was a happy tune time, definitely lots good tunes and bands.
Ill be checking songsterr for some old favs.

Yeah they went even more that way with General Public. Still great, just very different than early The Beat.

I used to listen to a lot of ska when I was younger - and go to see ska punk bands like Voodoo glow skulls, Reel big fish etc :slightly_smiling_face:

Not really Ska, but if it’s those sorts of bass lines you’re after I really really can’t recommend looking up some of the Clash’s stuff. strongly enough.

One of the few ska songs I can actually put a name on

Awesome. Maybe a good definition of Ska is “any music you can skank to” then

Except you can skank just fine to hardcore punk too, so maybe not.

Yes! I love some early ska, and some old rocksteady for that matter.
“Rudy, A Message to You” by the Specials is a great tune. Dandy Livingstone did the original, I believe.

Anyone like ska revival? This weekend I am off to Austin for some shows by the Slackers. Great band out of New York, I think. Three shows for $50. What a bargain!

Andrew.

For me, this is the absolute original:

It’s from 1968, WTF?

Love the Slackers. I did a cover of Wasted Days a while back.
