Bad Manners, yes, they’re also known over here in Germany, but The Selecter not (at least I don’t know them).
Yeah Bad Manners were everywhere.
Bad Manners, too “end of the pier caricature” for me, especially when the turned up on Top of the Pops with The Can Can! Madness also became a bit too much in the end. The last single I bought of theirs was Driving in my Car. I bought that and House of Fun out of loyalty to the band, but got bored after that. The first albums were certainly the best.
The Selector, now they were, are class!!
I still have to go back to the second-wave stuff like The Beat/English Beat and The Specials as my faves. Madness was in there too but always seemed on the pop side to me.
That said I was only on the periphery of that scene (from the punk side, also not my main love but one I definitely liked a lot.)
Yeah, I agree David. Love the English Beat!
Hey Anja, personally, I just love the song “Rankin full stop”.
Does anyone here listen to the Slackers? I just love their stuff. I do also like the Specials, but to me, the Slackers are better.
Thx for the suggestion. I didn’t know it but just went watching this on YT - and that’s good!! I was also watching “Tears of A Clown” which I think has a great bass line.
I posted Rankin’ Full Stop literally twice above ![]()
Ah yes, I see, and you have also posted a video of “Tears of a Clown”. I like that bass line.
I really liked The Beat. Dave Wakeling and Rankin’ Roger were the main force of the band, and they went on to form a great pop/new wave group later called General Public. Super cute pop with better than average melody and rhythm.
Rogers final solo album Public Confidential is worth checking out.
Speaking of ska/new wave crossovers, Terry, Neville and Lynval from The Specials went on to form Fun Boy Three:
New from UB40
heard this the other day and had literally 100% forgotten about it over the years, they were a pretty big band in the early MTV days.
