I didn’t mean the level balance, sorry. It gives close to the original mix. However, the filtering and EQ needed to extract the stems will, of course, introduce phase shifts and other slight artifacts (like the masking of other instruments you mentioned) to the extracted stems that will mix back in to a slightly different mix than the original track.
OK, I have created stems with RipX and StemRoller.
I used the phantastic “Nothing Else Matter” by Metallica. The source was a hires 24 bit/96KHz file, so very very good!
I did not upload the original, as I don’t want any trouble…
I used my Asus Zepherus S17 in silent mode (which is slower than normal, but silent).
- Intel I7 11800h
- 32GB RAM
- NVIDIA RTX 3070
- 8TByte NVMEs
- Windows 11 Pro
Rips:
- RipX DAW. Took 12.23 minutes. I have saved both 16 bit/44KHz and 32bit/96KHz
- StemRoller fast. Took 2:40 minutes
- StemRoller finetuned . Took 10:59 minutes

I haven’t listened to it yet - please use good headphones to compare!
all I got was a “file deleted” screen…
Can you try again? I have edited the link above!
I use Insynchq for all non-OneDrive clouds I have … I think yesterday there was a hickup with my uploads…
Should work now!
Yes - was able to download… ![]()
Let us know what you think!
Has anyone compared the quality of stems created with Audacity to those by Moises? I like the idea of creating local instead of with a cloud service.
I don’t know about Audacity. If you’re a Mac user though, the splitter in Logic Pro does a good job.
Are you sure the streams in Audacity are created locally? I’d have thought the track would be uploaded somewere, processed and then the streams downloaded. I personally like Moises because of all the other features - pitch changing, bpm / key detection etc
Ed,
Not sure about the local. I’ll try to test it with no internet connection and see if it works.
Ed, Tested it with no internet. Still works fine and creates 4 stems. I’ll try to do the same song with Moises and compare the results. Even if quality is equal, though, the extra features available in Moises might make me change my mind. Thanks for your input.
I have been using the Audacity route for a while now.
Moises has a 5-minute limit per song on the free plan, which was a bit of a shock the first time I used it on a song that was longer and it just abruptly stopped partway through the song.
