Apple sux

Memories surface in weird ways but I just had a vivid one about what the Apple ][ smelled like, of all things

ok this is silly but just the kind of thing apple does in terms of attention to detail:

That is a crazy idea for a controller. How cool.

Apple was a client of my agency back when Steve Jobs was still alive, but very ailing. When I’d travel to the original Apple Cupertino headquarters for meetings, I was constantly blown away by the attention to detail in the campus design and amenities for staff and visitors. Jobs demanded it and it truly was insanely great.

Yeah but they still suck for the dongle. Chiselers.

I’m shopping for a new desktop right now, and trying to pick between the base Studio M4 Max or the M4 pro mini with the upgraded CPU and 48GB RAM. I really can’t decide between the 2 and looking for a few opinions.

M4 Max w/ 14‑core CPU, 32‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine and 36 GB RAM or M4 pro w/ 14‑core CPU, 20‑core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine and 48GB RAM. On top of the CPU the Studio also has more port options. As configured, they’re the same price. The other important consideration for me (with this form factor) is that I think they both have the same cooling.

Gotta say I am really happy with my mini. The new M4 Minis are adorable and tiny too, much smaller than my M2 Pro.

I’ve done some software development on it as well and even at 16GB it’s fine.

Gaming too, runs titles like ESO just fine, maybe not a solid 60fps but I bet the M4 would.

The price is what’s getting me. It’s only $200 less than a studio… which seems to me to be way more of a beefy desktop. I doubt that I’ll get to do a lot of AAA gaming on it, being a Mac and all but I do like future proofing it so I won’t need to replace it for 4 - 6 years.

Yeah for only a $200 gap I would get the Studio.

That’s kind of where my heart’s at, but my brain is a cheapskate.

You’re kind of overspeccing the RAM there a bit too, 32GB will be fine for years, even for heavy usage like software development or rendering. Really 16GB will be for most usage.

I mention this because Apple’s price for RAM is super shitty.

It is but on the offhand chance that CD Projekt Red releases Witcher 4 for Mac, I want to be ready.

btw before i go all grumpy old man on apple i will freely admit that i bought the new ipad air last month to use in a pedal-less setup and it is doing a really nice job. it’s also about time to replace my ancient mini that i use for garageband. so yes i drink the kool aid also. i just bitch alot while doing it.

Welp, looks like it might not be just a pipe dream after all…

I am skeptical of 120fps UHD but this is cool and if Witcher 4 is indeed mac available I am all in

I don’t really need 120 fps as long as I can get a consistently smooth 60. This is also on a Macbook running the Max chip (36 GPU cores vs the 16 / 20 on the Pro).

I would get as much RAM as your budget will allow. One of the main things I don’t like about Apple computers is that you no longer can upgrade the RAM later. So, unless you plan to get a new computer again within a few years, I’d invest in a decent amount of RAM (read: as much as you can afford), to ā€œfuture-proofā€ it, as it were.

The same goes for the hard drive, but, of course, here you can also add external hard drives as necessary.
