I’m through module 4 in B2B…but around the end of Mod 2(?) there was an option (introduced by Josh) to add more updated content…
Can someone highlight what content or Mods was/were added to supplement the original course? I def should have been paying closer attention when I clicked “accept” Hahaha!!!
I finished the original course in its prior form, and the update came out right after that. I figured it would be a reworking of a few things, maybe some added lessons on top of what was already there, so I had a look. After looking, I decided to do the course again, something I’m normally loathe to do but did anyway since it seemed like it was going to be quite the update. Like you, I just wrapped up Module 4.
Turns out that every part of every lesson has been reworked; every video is new. The course flow and content is largely the same. You’ll recognize the backing tracks, the “real” songs for play-alongs, and the content and order of the lessons, with a couple of exceptions. What you do get is:
Updated video and graphics that better display what’s being taught and make the lesson easier to follow.
The workouts have been restructured to include a lot more teaching moments. In the course’s previous iteration it was more an inclusive lesson followed by three workouts at varying tempo. In the new iteration every video is a lesson, workout or otherwise. You won’t want to skip anything.
For me, the best and most obvious part is:
Your Trusty Bass Teacher™ has more years of teaching and playing behind him, and his approach to the course shows that. The original version was good, but the new-and-improved version really is new and improved. The explanations are clearer, and the main takeaways are driven home more often; you’ll get a lot more reminders about proper technique and mindset.
Also, the positive reenforcement—the “cheerleading”—has been ramped up. At one point Josh even states that it’s his job to be “your cheerleader”, and he succeeds at it. There are more assurances that things you might be struggling with are normal, that he and other bassists struggled with them too, that you can and will work through them, and that time and experience will ease or erase them.
Don’t discount the importance of this. Hearing that you can do it = believing you can do it = you will actually be able to do it. Josh is the antonym to the soul-crushing coach type, the “Maybe in a year you’ll be able to do this, chud!” persona that many of us are familiar with from junior high school gym class. (I haven’t forgotten you, Mr. Smith…you punk.)
I can’t tell you what to do and wouldn’t try, but I’m on my second run-through, and so far I find it a superior experience to what was an already great offering. If you were to decide to go back to square one and start again, I doubt anyone would fault you.
One of the biggest non-cosmetic changes is that Module 13 is completely different.
in the original, module 13 was all slap. Now the slap has been moved to a separate master class and module 13 is all about walkups (and walkdowns) with all new real songs.
Well this is super helpful (,fellow Matt)! I appreciate every word you’ve shared. I didn’t pay attention to the number of modules or the sub content and when I clicked on “agree” I later realized, I didn’t know what was added or changed. This sums it up fabulously.
When did you finish the first time? What year did the update happen?
Josh is amazing and I am really enjoying every minute. It’s a fun course and Josh does a great job of virtually keeping you wanting more and to hitting “next video”. Agree with everything you’ve said about his style!
This, in addition to @MEE3294 ‘s synopsis is super helpful. Thanks for responding! I’ve heard about the slap bass module being a challenge. Makes sense it was broken out.
I finished the original course days before the new version rolled out. It was about a three-week span before I said, “Ehhh…why not do it a second time? This new version looks pretty good.”
And ya know what? “Billie Jean” is a lot easier down the road. I still hate that song, but the benchmark lesson feels so much better now…
