Hey @trion23 I am curious about your ā€œPractice This Dailyā€ effort. Your post inspired me to give it a whirl but It’s not going as swimmingly as expected. Still, I’m working on it breaking into pieces and slowing down. How long did it take you to be comfortable with it?

I did it!

Started in the middle of November and finished my first time through today!

I must say as a 58 year old I’m surprised how emotional I feel and just how much I’ve learned. I have to say a huge thank you to @JoshFossgreen what a great course.

I mostly took all his advise, apart from the GAS that affected me in December when I added a second bass, second amp and I now have a dream set up to progress.

When I started I just wanted to see if I had the ability to play and maybe one day learn some basic songs to play by myself.

Now I really believe I can play with others and make music! (even if it is just roots and 5ths)

Onward to the checklists and the second time through the course.

Graduated 5th April 2026!

Graduated Easter Sunday 5th April 2026! As Josh says, a bittersweet day. It’s been so challenging but in the exciting and enjoyable way and now I have this entirely new skill set. I can speak a different language and I can chat to guitarists in a way that I was completely unable as a drummer to do before. Best course ever.

I’m going through the course a 2nd time, but this time adding things to the early play-alongs such as triads and 5ths and octaves. I felt a little lost for a couple of weeks, but I refocused and am going again . I’m also using another learning platform to progress and learning to sight-read music, although very slowly.

Graduated May 3, 2026. Took longer than I’d hoped because there were some lessons I was very slow to absorb, even though Josh urges us to keep moving; also had a week off for health reasons. Having made it through the first run, I think it was a great investment and I plan to redo the course much quicker. I don’t feel like I would really do a gig somewhere but I’ve got a few songs that I can play at what I call garage band quality, and I suppose roots and fifths would carry me a long way in a bass emergency.

I’m thinking of buying a pedal board and tuner and compressor pedals for a graduation present, but the prices start at moderately uncomfortable and go to screaming pain. I’m not going to be taking them out of the house; does anyone have a recommendation?

Congrats on finishing the course. I went down the pedal rabbit hole a bit after graduating. Having bought a bunch of pedals I would recommend getting a good multi fx pedal like everyone else says. A lot cheaper and you can try everything before you build out a board if that’s still what you want to do. In hindsight I should have done something like a Boss ME-90B ($300 or so used)and saved some time and money. If I liked it, I could’ve upgraded to a Helix (or even an Anagram). The boss and an upgrade together would still be cheaper than a decent board with a few good pedals. I like my board and I like the tinkering aspect of farting around with pedals but totally not worth it in my opinion.

Congrats! I agree, it’s best to start with an inexpensive multi effects pedal. I picked up a Zoom B1X Four, myself. Then you can experiment with lots of different effects and when you find ones you like, you’ll have an idea of which pedals you’d actually use and can shop accordingly.

But if/when you start looking at pedals, shop used. Other than my tuner (which doesn’t really count because I bought it years ago when I played guitar) and the Zoom, all of mine are used. For a tuner, the Peterson Strobo Stomp is probably the most popular tuner right now, though I have a Boss TU-3 and have no complaints. I also have an Empress Bass Compressor, because the LEDs make it easy to dial in.

I haven’t actually mounted them on a board yet, since I have no need to transport them, but I have enough scrap wood in the garage to knock something together. I actually have an old skateboard and might try using the deck from that to make something, not sure yet.
