Bass Goals for 2026

Do you have any bass goals for 2026, if so, what are they?

In terms of my 2026 bass goals, they really are quite simple:

  1. with the band, get to the magic 35/40 songs for the set list. We’re not a million miles from it, but will need some focus…
  2. with the band, get to the point where we can get some paid gigs… in my daydreams, I equate paid to professional, even if the pay will barely cover a new set of strings :winking_face_with_tongue:
  3. sell my Sire D5
  4. buy another Dingwall… just because :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

What are yours?

Yes, I definitely have a few goals lined up for 2026!

  1. Improve my sight-reading: I really want to get better at reading standard notation.
  2. The Album: Finish recording our band’s first album.
  3. Live playing: Simply play more gigs!
  4. Community: I aim to be a bit more active and helpful here on the forum than I managed to be in '25.

Happy New Bass Year to everyone! :guitar:

My goals.

  1. I really need to improve my fluency with the entire neck, and not just mostly stay north of the 12th fret.

  2. I want to improve my swing rhythm and reggae on-the-2 playing.

  3. I want to survive the 8-month wait for the 4-string medium multiscale headless bass I just ordered from Henrix Guitars. Specs:

-Swamp Ash Body with Roasted Oak Veneer
-5-Piece Maple/Ovangkol Neck
-Richlite Fretboard
-Compound Fretboard Radius 12ā€œ-16ā€œ
-Stainless Steel Frets
-Riviera Tuning Machines
-Custom Nova FRFR Pickups
-Filter Electronics
-Luminlay Sidedots
-Graphtech Nut
-Schaller Security Locks
-Gigbag

Options:

Spalted Maple Top 2
Curved Maple Fretboard Inlays

Here’s the top wood. It’s going to look fabulous when finished, especially with the roasted oak veneer.

I’d like to break free from hanging out on root notes (which I know isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it’s because I need more knowledge and practice).

More consistent practice

  • get into a jazz quartet (standards) and really dig into that walking bass stuff
  • record three songs in the studio with the melodic rock group
  • play three gigs with the melodic rock group
  • play several (smaller) gigs with the jazz quartet
  • start working/composing on my new album
  • learn one new technique (probably proper palm muting)
  • have some more focus on fretless (if time allows)
  • sell (or give away) three basses - buy one(!?!)

pretty much mine too. was it you @Jenn_L that mentioned contacting Mark at TalkingBass about that Groove Trainer course I paid for? i did just that and Mark agreed that GT wasnt really the course for me, refunded me and advised that i should probably try the Creative Bassist course.

Tis a lot more expensive that GT tho, but he said itll probably be discounted in New Year so i’m looking out for that, see if its down to anything i can afford right now.

either way, my goals seem to be similar to yours, try and work out some patterns/grooves of my own so if im ever jamming and the guitarist calls out ā€œthis ones in the key of C with a I IV iv V progressionā€, then i could maybe come up with something myself using pentatonic notes.

best of luck to us both

Oh good! I’m glad you got some clarity on that. And I just got an email about the Talkingbass sale lol.

Best of luck to you also.

Happy 2026 to all!

@Jenn_L just had the email too. tempting to push myself with the CB course but also interesting to read he’s bringing out a Pentatonic Playbook course soon, so im not sure which would suit me best as i guess by knowing all the pentatonic options available then that helps to come up with your own patterns and become a ā€˜creative bassist’

i see another email winging its way to him

My goals for 2026:

  • Finish the B2B course (1st run, at least).
  • Work on moving around the fretboard more efficiently/quickly.
  • Take my absolute mediocrity for what it is, and just enjoy the process of learning as a beginner. It’s about the journey.

My 2026 bass goals are:

  • Keep practicing slap, and get to the point where I’m actually playing some songs that make use of it. I’ve been doing it a few months already and I’ve learned how slow progress can be, so I think a year is pretty reasonable.
  • Get more familiar with scales and the fretboard, to the point I can noodle and improvise at least a little bit confidently.
  • Play more songs I enjoy playing. I’m getting a little stuck on doing things meant to improve my ability, I need to spend more time enjoying where I’m at.
  • As a stretch goal, try and pick up some ability to read sheet music.
