Bass Mass Scoreboard

Let’s make a catalogue of bass weights, the results of this test surprised me a bit:

  1. Early 90’s Ibanez SDGR 800, the lightest bass I actually own: 3,675 kg / 8,1 lbs

  1. 2023 Harley Benton HBZ-2004, the one that looks and feels the lightest to me: 3,95 kg / 8,7 lbs

  1. 1988 Yamaha BB-G4A, looks rather heavy, thick body, actually is and feels light: 3,765 kg / 8,3 lbs

  1. THE BEHEMOTH Harley Benton JB-75 FL, wonder how much more it would be with frets:
    4,74 kg / 10,5 lbs

And my friends Harley Benton PB-20BK LH, a featherweight poplar body lefty: 3,725 kg / 8,2 lbs

Cool! One thing to bear in mind is different basses of the same model can vary widely:

Wood density varies a lot

Yes, but you can still expect an ash body JB like mine to be vastly heavier than anything made from, say, poplar. And while carrying that weight isn’t exactly a problem for me, it’s still a huge relief to switch to any of the other ones

My mind thought, “Bassmas” and I was expecting presents, bows, and shiny gear in this thread. Now I have vague recollections of a Phish song I’m going to have to go find.

edit - change sing to song like a crazy human.

Oh yeah no argument and I also greatly prefer lighter instruments. This thread is a good idea.

I have no idea :joy:
Delivery note on the box says 10kg, but obviously that’s “up to” 10kg, and the gig bag it comes with is built like a tank too :joy:

Instructions:

  1. Stand on scale, weigh self.
  2. Grab bass, stand on scale holding it, weigh self + bass

I’m Canadian so not sure about oz to lbs but this is the best I could do with my shitty scale.

Schecter stiletto stealth 5 string 8.2lbs
Epiphone Thunderbird 4 string 8.8lbs
