Bass mods - electronics

Looking for ideas, links, etc for mods that can be done to the electronics on a bass.

I have a project bass I’m just having fun with and I’d like some ideas of crazy things I can do to it.

So far I have:

  • Momentary killswitch button
  • Adding a reverse P pickup
  • building a varitone switch knob with 6 different capacitor values

I’m also thinking about the idea of building in small distortion box.
I’m just really being silly and trying to see what different sounds I can make on the bass instead of building it into a box.

Awesome! I built a project bass a couple of months ago. Bought new tuners, bridge, pots, wiring and pickups. Learned to solder in the process. Having a project bass can be a lot of fun and a great learning experience . . . If you decide to build your own pedal, that would be very cool . . . You’ll have to share your progress!

I’ve done a few guitar pedal kits over the years and I built an A/B switch (there’s a post somewhere) but I’m really interested in electronics that go IN the guitar.

I’d probably stop short of building a Guitorgan though :joy:

You could build a multi effect pedal into the body of a bass.

I’ve thought about it.

Hi-pass and Gilmour switches for a start, of course you would need to put in Strat type pickups or even better lipsticks

Many, many years ago, I installed the guts of a MXR Micro Amp in the control cavity of my Gibson EB-0 bass.

I think I got the idea out of Guitar Player magazine. The single knob made it easy to do so.

Nowadays, I build a boutique travel bass that I have installed a headphone amp and tuner into. Up until now, I have used units that utilized an aux. input jack.

I’ve decided to catch up with technology, so now I am looking at installing more modern headphone amp; The Fender Mustang Micro Plus.

This will allow me to have a bluetooth connection, as well as being rechargable.

It is still in the design phase.

Headphone amp was gonna be my suggestion.

I have toyed with the idea of a headphone amp in a bass- I think this would be very marketable

1,000%. I’m having a tough time with headphone amps. The aux port on the one I liked stopped working, the one I have now has a weird effect on it, I have a Spark Go that I do like but hate all the cords… meh. lol

Well there’s always a Spark Neo. Wireless everything.

Indeed. I so wish it had come out in time for Christmas! But maybe I’ll sell the Go and get that one.
