I always thought there was a difference…I’m a guitar player but I never considered myself knowledgeable enough for that guitarist moniker…I reserved that for the guys that can pick up a guitar and regardless of the setting (jazz, country, rock, etc) always feel comfortable. I thought bass would be the same way. Players at a level where there were no secrets left regarding the instrument could consider themselves bassists.
