That’s totally true.

Semi-related - I think they look awesome, but does this feel to anyone else like a fad that is going to die out?

The blue one?
Lobster is selling his that he highly upgraded with Hipshot light weight tuners, a Albridge bridge, a G&L MDF pick up and a series / parallel / single switch.
I thought about making an offer on it. He is selling for like $420, which after all those upgrades is already a killer price.

A superb gateway into the time-honored Fender family, the Squier Affinity Series

Thats how many affinities are advertised. thats all I am saying, they are the lower tier.
And nothing wrong with lower tier models, my Ray4, my favorite bass is the most basic Stingray on the market.

But, for $499, I would actually go for this one, which has the same finish as the squire in question.

Oh yeah when you throw in used of course the new Squier isn’t even in the running at all.

Yes the blue one, I’ve got an EMG pickup, no switches, will be culled I think if you’re interested

Yeah, after selling off two basses this week, with another listed, and another about to be listed, and one being tricked out, then listed, I am actually thinking about getting this one.
I know @JustTim Loves his, and is about to cull everything but two of these, after being a life ling Carvin fan.

Thanks for the offer, but I am not sure I want a 32" scale bass, but if I did, I would be going for Lobsters with the G&L MDF pick up and the other bonuses like Hipshot light weight tuners (which I may throw on my USA Stingray, and put those back on the Jaguar) and Albridge bridge, plus the 3 way switch.
If you think about it, his asking price is a steal, since the bass is not going from $249 to $349 new, and your EMG pickup had to be $125-$150, so even if you get the bass for $249, plus the pick up and tax, you are over $400.
He is asking $420 but taking offers.

I just don’t think I would play a 32" all that much, and its not really a good investment bass, because all the upgrades are diminishing returns.
For Squire Affinity’s, Squire’s and Ray4’s included, if you trick them out, it is still hard to find a buyer that will pay for all the upgrades, when most people looking at a bass in that price range, are not looking to spend the actual value if what has been put into the bass for upgrades.

The best thing to do is put all black (inexpensive import) hardware and make it LOOK sick, but don’t spend a bunch on electronics. People buy with their eyes, and if they see something like this

They will be more likely to pay over what that bass sells for New or used, because it is eye catching.

If you want to sell yours off, and get a good price, think about putting an inexpensive set of black tuners and a black bridge, put some cool knobs on it, and try to get a black control plate.
Then if possible, put on a Blue Pearl or black pick guard, or some catchy design, and make the most out of it. If you add about $50 to $70 to it, you might be able to sell it for full value of what you put in, including the pick up because it will stand out, and catch the attention of people that might be interested in the upgraded electronics as well.
Just a suggestion, but based on the fact Lobster’s has not sold for asking price of $420 (which is a steal with all the upgrades) because New ones that LOOK THE SAME are $249 to $349, ALL OVER REVERB.
IF it LOOKED different when they did a search and saw 10 basses, then scroll across one that is tricked out, it will get a lot more views.

There’s a bass drum so it counts…

I just love the creative idea Vox had back in the day.

OK, good to know. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I thank the lucky stars I got a good one at random then!

The cavity is done with conductive paint and on mine the ground wire wasn’t tightened down against the paint. That could be at least some of the shielding problem. I haven’t had it in front anything noisy yet though.

The grain in the fretboard doesn’t seem quite as tight and solid as in other instruments. I’m curious if that contributes to fret problems or not over the long term.

I just changed out the pickups to Delano and the strings to NYXL and it has blown me away how great the sound is now. I can’t actually believe how much I like it. I have less $ into this than half of the least expensive Fender MIA and I’m liking it.

Oh, yeah, there is nothing wrong with it for an upgrade platform at all. If there is anything physically or mechanically wrong with it, then trade it in for another one, as they can be hit or miss, but I am thinking they are getting to be more hit then miss at present time.

I do love my Dimensions! Well, Dimension. The second doesn’t get here until mid-week. Then I have to make the decision to keep MiM Jazz and MiA Dimension or MiM Dimension and MiA Dimension. I’m torn.

Honestly I think I was a life-long fan of the IDEA of Carvin, rather than actual Carvin gear, because for so long they were out of my reach. But now that I’ve had an LB20, a B4, an X44, and a couple of amps, I can honestly say that with exception to the B4 I’m much more a fan of the Ibanez and Fender gear I’ve had.

The B4 was a great bass and I wish I still had it, but that whole drama was detailed elsewhere.

I still think Carvin/Kiesel makes the best LOOKING instruments, though. Their finishes can’t be beat.

I love my Carvin BX 500 amp, it kicks major ass and sounds oh soooo good.

I still love Carvin basses, but not all of them. Many I don’t have interest in, cuz I only want 4 string, but if I found the right Carvin, I know I would love it.
I base this on my previous experience with Carvin Guitars. I loved everyone I played (I only played the ones I liked, so not all of them), and the one I ordered was hands down the best guitar I ever played.

I kind of have my eye on a MIM Dimension Deluxe that is on Reverb right now.
I have sold a few basses, and am listing another one tonight, and have another one soon after that.
when I sell one more bass, I may just pull the trigger on this.

Let me help you.

When you posted it above I was very tempted to buy it and sell my black on black version. Ever since @JustTim posted his I just keep jonsing for that finish. I know it ain’t gonna make a lick of difference as far playability or tone but damn it looks good. So why haven’t I made the dumbass decision to pull the trigger? Seller didn’t post shipping to my area.

Get it! Lol

That’s the same one I have. Word of warning on the MiM Deluxe Dimensions: mine was almost completely unshielded… no copper tape, very little conductive paint. I had to re-shield and ground mine. And my understanding is that’s common for the MiM Deluxes. So if you get it, plan to do some shielding.

Oh, but the black on black is rad looking. I kinda wish I’d gotten one of those.

They reissued that Set a couple years ago. If I had the room for a set that would absolutely be the one I got. The dual pedals of different regions on the kick drum is super clever.

It’s a neck through design if that helps

After you had your problem with grounding I was going to tear down mine to compare it to the pics you took. It needs a clean up anyhow., so I may do that sooner than later. The oddest thing on mine is the fretboard looks very dry. Nothing like I have ever seen on my other Fender rosewoods. A new set of strings would do it good too.

Funny how we all want what the other person has.
