Can someone explain to me the point of a clear pickguard?

I love to see the bass body, and I really dig basses without pickguards But a clear one? Why? The screws ruin it for me.

Golden hardware, tortoise shell on pink body, infamous sunburst bodies… Some like, some don’t

Well, I guess it’s a compromise - if you still need a pickguard (because you are really going at it with a pick) but want to see the color/wood/grain, then that might be your only option. And screwing them on is probably preferred to having them glued on (all things considered).

I dig the looks of clear pickguards, but I also own basses without any pickguard. No problem for me, as I play without a pick.

That said, slappers might also benefit from pickguards…

Does look good with a plexi pickguard :star_struck:

I don’t think that rash on Charles’ bass is from slapping.

But this rash on Kiyoshi’s is

Frets are seriously worn too.

Well, obviously I don’t know for sure (haven’t discussed this with Charles himself), but I think that is a pretty valid guess. What else would it come from? In my own limited slap experience, I have noticed that my fingernails tend to land in that area between pops…

It also coincides with the location of the rash on Kiyoshi’s bass… Anyhoo, not important…

It definitely could be! I just wouldn’t have pegged Charles as going that utterly savage on his Mayones

Well, he’s spending a lot of time up the neck… That might contribute to some point.

He is a pretty hard slapper if need be, even if not as savage as Kiyoshi…

It’s a LeFay, by the way

Yes, but you wouldn’t pick there, and you wouldn’t get any significant wear from fingerstyle plucking…

My money is on the popping action from slap/pop, but it’s probably also a good thing I don’t need to put any actual cash down

Oops! I actually knew that (and could see the logo) but brain locked on to Mayones for some reason, sorry!

It could definitely be, just seemed… unlikely for him? I don’t know. Regardless, something shredded that fine bass.

Final piece of evidence… it’s the popping, but potentially even more so… the strumming (had totally forgotten about that possibility):

(sorry all, for hijacking the thread, but my nerd brain wouldn’t let that go. And, for @MC-Canadastan: a pickguard might have helped here, even a transparent one )

Ahh yeah strumming seems likely too. Actually for Kiyoshi’s body damage as well, she strums a lot. Though in her case the neck and pickup are pure slap rash

yes, that B string did a number on that poor bass :scream:

What do you think that round divot is from on the B string side?

Charles Berthoud’s main axe is a black LeFay D-Tuner, a German custom.

He also plays a couple of custom-shop Schecters and an EBMM StingRay.

Yeah, one of the folks here actually has a Herr Schwarz they bought because they liked his, so I had a real low-brain moment there to cough up Mayones.

No idea. That’s her first Stage I which she bought used so maybe she got it that way? Or not, it’s hard to picture someone beat on a bass more than she does.
