I think I’ve either seen that bass in ā€œHeavy Metalā€ the motion picture or the music video for Iron Maiden’s ā€œWriting On The Wallā€

This is a custom bass, not a production model. Original price $6K+.

I absolutely dig it! How would you go about intonating with a bridge like that? Or would you?

Great question! This bass essentially has an acoustic instrument bridge, meaning that it is a carved saddle that is sanded (altered) to alter the shape (position) of each string break relative to the nut to ensure proper intonation. Long story short: You set intonation by physically changing the shape of the saddle.

As an example, a quality steel string acoustic guitar typically sports a bone (or ivory, in the case of vintage instruments) saddle (similar to a nut), although synthetic material saddles are also available these days, but certainly not traditional.

I could be wrong, but something doesn’t look quite right with her hand and wrist in the lower photo.

Got one recorded tonight, I’ll get it dressed and ready to go tomorrow.

So far I’m a big fan of going from 12 lbs to 7.5 lbs. I tend to play on the middle pickup most of the time. It’s got a very ā€œhotā€ sound to it. I’m having a hard time deciding whether to anchor my thumb on the middle or bridge pickup. My initial thoughts were that it sounded very ā€œpunk rockā€ and I still feel that way. It wants to play aggressively. It’s also my only bass with roundwounds on it, that could be part of it.

Hey There! The Dingwall JTS arrived a couple of weeks ago. It plays like a dream. I was going to hold it out of playing it live in worship for a while as I got used to it, but it is SO smooth and practically plays itself. I jumped in with it and can’t look back. I picked up my Fender P yesterday and felt like I was holding a two by four with razors for strings in comparison. I’m exaggerating, but truly surprised at how it plays and especially at how it sounds.
