In Texas and in other southern US states, there’s a seemingly innocuous sounding expression that is: “Bless (his/her) heart.”

It definitely doesn’t mean what one might think it does. In fact, quite the opposite. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

So, in the case of this horrific sugar-frosted finish, I’d say: Bless its heart. :face_with_peeking_eye:

That’s my second favorite, behind “He’s a peach.”

I kinda knew this! And I dig the expression. The question is always: can I pull it off using it approrpiately as a non-native speaker??

Context is king. The phrase works best when speaking to Americans primarily from the South. Still, it has been used in many films over the years, so it could work.

This video touches on its multiple meanings:

The Danes have a word (well, more like a sound) called “nå” (roughly, “naw”), which can mean all kinds of things depending on context and inflection. Everything from “OK”, “I see”, “interesting”, “veeeery interesting”, “now I remember” to “oh, well”, “whatever” and also “tell me more”, “juicy”, “woah”, and a whole lot more. It’s really super versatile

But, perhaps we should take that to the language corner…

Actually, it works quite well when the target is completely unaware of the intent. As far as whether @joergkutter can use it, well, it’s mostly used by women.

Women do use it more often, but men use it, too. Y’all come down and see.

And, if you can’t, well, bless your heart.

I’ve spent most of my life in South Carolina and Arkansas, with a brief stint in Texas. I think I got it. In SC you would never hear a guy say it.

Cool. Not my lifelong experience in Texas. :man_shrugging:

Or Oklahoma. I’ve personally head a guy say it. Along with “He’s a peach.”

Both can be either perfectly fine or really backhanded, depending on context.

Yeah, in polite company it’s considered poor taste to insult or complain directly so they have gentile methods to talk around it and say the same things. In the South that is.

I was selling a bottle of Dom Perignon (wedding present), and the buyer told me to take a picture outside in the sun and I thought “That’s a good idea Beavis!”
