Bass Tab Questions / Issues? - Put 'em here!

OK, so based on our discussion in Josh vs the world: different fret positions in tabs - why & how? - #21 by chris_van_hoven I “optimized” the tabs for “Hey” by the Pixies.

I used the “Automatic Finger Positioning” from Guitar Pro that can be hit & miss, especially when slides are involved.

My input is really from a beginner’s POV. Basically it’s about the choice: micro shifting vs string crossing.

This is the original tab:

Here you have to microshift on the A string, as most bass players have only five fingers. Of course, it’s not a biggy, but I noticed that I microshift either in the beginning (A1->A2) or at the end (A4->A5). It’s a matter of routine, I know, but as a beginner there is a slight timing delay while doing a shift…

So with the “optimized version”, A5 is moved to D0, which might still be an issue for the Simpsons, but not for five fingered humans.

Here it is:

Now it is a little easier to finger, BUT you need to improve your muting as D0 is ringing too long if you don’t get it under control.

There is really no question in this post, I just find it interesting, how different ways of fingering solve or introduce issues for beginners.
