Hey everyone,
I’ve been wanting to ask a question on bass gear
Is it safe/practical to run a bass guitar through a guitar head into a bass cab?
I know that on the first Queens of the Stone Age album they used a guitar head for bass to get that gritty, mid-forward tone, and honestly I love the sound on that record. I’m curious if anyone here has done something similar—using a guitar amp head for its character but still pairing it with a bass cab to handle the low end.
Are there things I should watch out for (impedance, wattage, blowing the head, etc.)? Any specific models that work particularly well or ones to avoid?
Well that’s how the Brits did it back in the day get a perfectly working amp and cranks it up and got the outrageous tone out of it. Today you can get that tone from a pedal.
You can just have to do a bunch of trials and errors to get your tone.
I love playing bass through a guitar amp.
If you’re playing at huge volumes, you need to be wary of the speakers you’re playing through.
Bass speakers are set up to handle different frequency range and different (much higher) wattage.
I’d recommend playing guitar amps through guitar speakers (and being careful not to try any sub-octave stuff or not to use any high-output active electronics) and bass amps with bass speakers.
Ideally, you have both rigs running so you can get that awesome mid-heavy punch, but still keep your low end.
