Bass Tone Porn

This could have gone into several other (existing) threads, but maybe we need a thread to share specific examples of gorgeous bass tones!?!

Triggered by a discussion with another bass acquaintance, I revisited the 1988 Zappa record “Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life” and Scott Thunes’ bass sound (and playing) is absolutely mind-blowing. Check out: The Torture Never Stops Pt 2:

I didn’t know about Thunes’ time with Zappa when I first heard him.
I met him in his tenure as the bassist for the California rock band The Mother Hips.
He had the best electric bass sound I’d ever heard.
Massive SVT rig (Ampeg SVT all tube head, 8x10 ampeg cabinet) through a massive pedal board and a beat-to-hell old P bass.

His playing was unbelievable and his sound was unmatched.
Great call on Scott Thunes.

From what I read, he mainly played a Carvin LB 50 while with Zappa. And here possibly with a flanger and/or chorus. It’s pretty spectacular really…

Oh that’s very very nice. Phaser or Chorus on bass is my jam. Always loved this one:

Of course, it’s Hooky’s trademark sound.

Edit: Is Youtube not embedding now for some reason? I’ve seen this on a few people’s posts recently.

This bass tone just tickles my ears in all the good ways. The chorus part is just sublime. Any ideas how this masterful sound is created?

I could be wrong, but to me that sounds like a P-bass in to an Ampeg B-15 and some warm compression (probably from the amp).

Can hear some kind of vaguely similar here at the start with a B-15 and a Keeley compressor.

I’m probably in the minority but Fred Falke (bassist and massive French house music producer) was the reason I started on Bass. So I’m biased.

Don’t know why the link won’t embed?

Well tone porn, you can’t go without the sledgehammer.

Next is not exactly what I like but it’s definitely unique tone by Joe Dart

I have never seen those rigid instrument stands before (like the 2nd vid)…I couldn’t understand how he could balance the bass still in the same place in the air (and why he would want to), then I saw the stand

They are pretty cool. I’m not sure how comfortable on a longer session but it’s nice to have one stationary. That said, it’s not cheap.

they look weird to me but might be nice to play…they should have the expensive basses on them in shops though for test playing so no chance of dropping them (>kicks over stand)

It’s actually the opposite. This stand has one of the beefiest design I’ve used similar to what you mount the drum stuffs but I can probably figure out the way to drop this or trip it over some how. Put expensive axe on it for people to walk up and try would be a disaster waiting to happen, lol.

I love the growling sound of the bass in this track:
Tool - 7empest

The growling is kinda like a motor underneath (especially at 11:10 beneath the guitar solo and later at 12:45)

Quite a cool sound here:

Really amazing tone there! I absolutely love Tom Misch and had not heard this one before. Tom is just kinda peppering the song with little licks but it’s perfect. The bass line really moves the song along as well! Thanks for sharing man!

Yeah, I hadn’t been aware of this either until a few days ago. And I had to google Tom Misch

(Yussef plays otherwise often with Rocco Palladino on bass (yep, Pino’s son))

Really digging it!
