I have a bass with a single, split, active pickup. The other day it seemed like my jack might have been failing because it sounded like my bass was quiet or not picking up unless I wiggled the cable a bit. I was able to wiggle it enough to practice 2 days ago.
Yesterday I was trying to play Rocksmith and the jack wouldn’t work unless I pulled the cable slightly out. Lots of noise at this point so I’m guessing I pulled the ground out.
At this point I was going to open it up and see if I could bend the jack arms back into position but the jack on this bass is enclosed in a metal tube about 2.5" long.
At that point I took a small scope camera and saw the contacts were a bit dirty so I tried to clean them up.
After plugging back in to test I realized only the pickup on the 2 high strings was working.
I ordered a new jack but now I’m wondering if it could be a short somewhere else. The jack has 2 black wires and a white. Could it be the connection for one of those isn’t making contact?
I’m just curious what you folks think. I was planning to swap the jack and troubleshoot backwards from there.
So the nut is tight. There was a lot of debris on the inside. I didn’t use contact cleaner yet but I also noticed there is soldier on the connectors where I have the clips for my new pickups. This is a cheap Gio bass so the jack is probably not the best quality anyway. Once I replace that 100% of the internals will be better parts.
I think when I put things together back in 2020 I just pulled the wires off the existing since the new jack that came with my pickup wouldn’t fit.
I have a new jack on the way IT’S BLACK!
Kind of a pain, I have to wait a couple of days but it’ll be cool for more of my hardware to match.
