BassBuzz App? (Your Input Needed)

For me, I’m not sure an app would have made it much more useful. For you it might! Meaning the ease to get the course to others and to be able to find it searching for “bass” in the App Store. I know you hear this a lot, but I think to make the course next level would be to build out a part two or intermediate course. I think you have a base that would certainly buy it! Your lessons are well thought out and entertaining enough to keep attention. Build on that. I’d buy!

App would be nice to have. As for features, something the Talking Bass scales app would be a cool add-on. Maybe some enhanced split screen functionality too?

Josh, I would prefer if you spend your time more on next lessons than creating an app. I am ok with using browser on my laptop. I guess, the app should be free, but I am willing to pay money for another courses

I agree! I’m still in the first B2B Course but I already know I want more. I love the teaching style and short chunk exercises. It’s perfect for my way of learning.

Great idea it would benefit when waiting at restaurant and stores from going through the hassle of the browser. much quickly with app. hope this would also link directly with your YouTube videos, add more beats counting information. You Go Josh

I don’t think a B2B app would add much, if anything, that can’t be done in a browser. I would prefer the addition of an intermediate course rather than yet-another app that duplicates the functionality of a browser.

Here’s another one from left field…

What about putting in a way to gamify practice with daily and weekly goals with a way to track and see if you are hitting those goals.

The difficulty in this would be coming up with practice routines to represent the 3-5 daily and weekly goals. You could build the whole thing around The Beast.

@JoshFossgreen Ive thought about this and I think the app idea should be well behind the instructional programs

I am also learning guitar, using Justin Sandercoe‘s app. The approach is a little different than Josh‘s course. It uses videos to explain topics or maybe introduce new chords and how to play them. Think of it like a live session with a music teacher.

Then, after you finished watching those videos for a module, you start the practice routine for that module, where you have a fixed routine specifically for that module, e.g. practice one chord very slowly and try to make every string sound perfectly clean.

Next there are one-minute chord-changes where you try to get as many changes between two specific chords within one minute. Afterwards you type in, how many changes you got. That is an easy and effectiv way to monitor your progress.

I like both approaches. Josh is more like „practice and play along with me, while I sometimes might explain some of the finer details. I am at the very beginning (3rd module), but I find that I learn things and practice finger movement without even noticing it. That makes this course so motivating andI always find myself excited for the next practice session.

I also use an IPad on a notestand, because this way, it is easier for me to read the tab on screen. I can also adjust the height of the stand, depending on whether I play sitting or standing.

I like the opportunities a well developed app CAN give the student, but the most important part for me is, if the teacher is able to make a connection with the student, and Josh has a great way to motivate and encourage you. This, in my opinion is much more important than a fancy app with lots of features.

Having said that, an app CAN provide a lot of useful features, like a groove trainer for example or maybe a trainer where you can choose which chord progression is being played and then you can practice or improvise over it.

But creating a well working app is a lot of work and would take a lot of Josh‘s time, so the question is, does he have the time and resources to do that? I am very happy with the format as it is, but I would also enjoy to have some additional useful features that might improve one‘s practice time. Unless it is taking time away from Josh to produce his really awesome practice videos, which probably also take a lot of time to produce (plus the tabs and sheet music and the backing tracks)

Hopefully there will be more material in the future.

I take my previous statement back.
An app would have greatly benefitted me given that is had a good gamification concept for practice.

As I said in the other thread - I currently use yousician for daily practice if I do not have a specific song or goal in mind and it helps me staying motivated and actually practice daily. It’s not only the gamification aspect but also removes a lot of planning and thinking for the practice session. I just start the app. Start a 30min long practice session, get a warmup with known songs, learn something new and for the finish I’ll get to play something I played already almost perfect.
My sightreading skills for the bass clef are also steadily improving as I only use the standard notation without tabs.

Sometimes I play more casual and just go through the motions and sometimes I really take my time to learn something new, starting with 30-40% speed. You can do both/either.

That being said I’m not sure if B2B is the place for such an app as Rocksmith and Yousician already try to fill the gamification niché of learning an instrument.

I’m pretty much only Yousician for practice too nowadays. Good fun and I’m learning a few decent songs too.

@JoshFossgreen I’d be interested in an app. In my current set up I’m using my iPhone to mirror your videos to my Apple TV, which tends to be a little slow with my cruddy rural internet. My wish list would be:

  • auto advance from video to video
  • if the video sizes are high res at all, offer a lower res option. They don’t load fast enough for me so they get a little glitchy.
  • if you added an Apple TV app I’d love you forever
  • add the schedule sheets, but with clickable boxes. If you want to get really fancy, make them mix and match so you can easily have weeks when you’re doing a faster schedule, but can adjust it for weeks when you can’t.
  • a forum search function, and a way for noobs to get more quickly into the current conversation since some threads are over 1000 replies long.
  • I was doing a lesson today, thinking I’d want to come back later and review all the speaking parts without necessarily playing the exercises. Basically an audio book of the ‘instruction manual’ portion of the lessons that I could listen to while doing non-bassy things.

That’s it so far anyways. I’m on day 5 of B2B and I’m two lessons in to Module 3. REALLY enjoying the course - I’ve been teaching myself for a year so it’s not super hard yet, but there’s still a lot of great tips and helps me confirm how I’ve progressed on my own. I also really enjoy the pace of it - it keeps it motivating and interesting. Thanks!

I’d love an app.

iPad compatible to take advantage of the larger screen

Ability to download lesson within the app so I can practice without the internet

Casting to my tv would great

I’ll come up with more options later.

It’s a minor thing - but easy, and applies for both web based and any potential app: time for each lesson. Would be great to know how long each lesson, and then each part of lesson is. Helps us decide, “yeah, that next part is only 4 minutes - I’ll do it now rather than call it a day.”
