Berthoud Goes Bohemian

Beautiful multi-track rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody on a 6-string fretless.

I’m really glad Mark Smith will interview Charles Berthoud.

Why bother playing anything?

Would that others could play like this. Keep at it. It gets easier.

Charles is not my cup of tea. I’m not fond of the tone or arrangement.

We all can’t, and don’t, like the same genres or musicians. Personally, there are some I can’t stand. Regardless, I’m glad they all exist.

It would be a dull world where we all liked the same thing. Not liking his tone or arrangement is just taste and opinion, which means nothing. He is very skilled.

Each persons individual color helps paint the sky and make us all better

I think he’s fantastic, but I have never really enjoyed watching virtuosos, for the same reason extended solos at shows don’t really grab me.

I think you missed my joke- Two Set reference.
If you are familiar with them they are great musicians themselves and often feature virtuosos.
My kids actually go to the same school Brett did and my son is a, wait for it, viola player!

I enjoy every example of virtuosity I’m fortunate enough to witness, regardless of the art form or performance type. I might not dig a particular genre (I might even detest it), but when someone delivers an undeniably great performance, I find it an inspiring human achievement.

Charles just might be my favorite bassist… he is just so good. It’s been cool watching his channel blow up over the last few years. That being said, Davie 504 was that one that ultimately inspired me to pick up a bass and Charles is the one that makes me put it down and just watch.

The guys are friends and great players. Davie gave Charles a lot of tips on how to get his YT channel off the ground. It’s a pleasure watching each dude play.

He’s a great player, but man, the titles of his videos are so “yt algorithm friendly” it makes me cringe every time I read another formulaic title.

I mean, if I were making my living on YouTube, my video titles would be the most YT algorithm friendly titles you’d ever seen.

That is part of how you make a living on YT…Clickbait sells!

Absolutely.

YT is serious business for many, including Charles, Davie and even our Trusty Bass Teacher.

And formulaic, click-baity YT video titles currently get attention, which is the coin of the realm.

It is what it is.

I tried this and it works, I did a review of a Zo Fluglehorn, it was pretty average as was my playing on the video.
I changed the title to something stupid as an experiment and got a stupid amount of views.

I checked out TwoSet Violin. Hadn’t been aware of them before. Very cool.

The guys can sure play, but their self-effacing stuff in the presence of virtuosos is priceless.

Thanks for the heads up.

They are very good, they have been there and done that with International Orchestras etc.
Brett actually had to stop teaching (at the school he went to btw) because of their Youtube success.
They have done some collabs with Davie504 btw also

I’ve noticed a few thing about Charles in recent months though…in his previous videos, he went out of his way to talk about what he was playing and a few how’s, but lately, he’s talking a lot less and just playing. The other thing I was thinking about, doesn’t it take 10 minutes before a YT video can be monetized? I’ve heard other YouTubers say that. If it’s true, Charles isn’t making much off the videos themselves.
