Best follow-up course to bassbuzz

Hi everyone,

Completed the bassbuzz course about 2 months ago. Since then I feel like my practice has been without direction. I’ve been learning songs and revisting some of the lessons, but was wondering what the best follow-up courses are after bass buzz. I think this question has been posted here before, but that was a while ago, and in the past year or so it seems the number of bass-related educational content creators has exploded (and with it the number of courses etc. available).

Hi @benwyrwoll - welcome to the forum!

Yes, there’s been a lot of discussion in the past about this. I think the consensus is to check out Talking Bass. Mark has a different style than Josh but is extremely knowledgeable and has a bunch of different courses. He also has a lot of YouTube videos you can check out if you don’t want to commit to another course yet.

Another more recent one a couple of us have discovered is Kyle Teaches Bass. He focuses more on creativity on bass and also has a YouTube channel and new course you can check out.

Scott’s Bass Lessons is another option many people on the forum have gone through. They’re also very knowledgeable and cover a lot, but the style may not be for everyone.

That should give you a decent place to start.

Thanks for the swift reply @Jenn_L

I think I’ll have a look at some of the stuff from talking bass.

Another guy I’ve seen is Dan Hawkins who has a couple of courses - not too much talk about them on here so not sure how good they are?

I’m not sure how his courses are! I do subscribe to his YouTube. I find his stuff a little hard to follow (mostly because I’m not that good lol), but his videos are good and he does seem to know his stuff!

The best is to start over for the second time or 3rd time. You’ll be learning new things guaranteed.

Second this. I am in 2nd way ‘round. Learning more things, for sure.

I should’ve mentioned I’ve done the course 3 times now - I have learnt new things each time. Just looking for something new though haha - good as it is

Hey guys! You might want to check this thread on this subject:

Once you finish the course are you locked out or is it always available to revisit? Curious as I have not done it yet.

You always have access!

Mark is a member of this forum and is often recommended. The intermediate lesson market is quite flooded and is probably why Josh has never done a follow up course.

I picked up both Groove Trainer and The Creative Bassist based on that thread when they were on sale. I finished B2B about a month ago and personally I find that Groove Trainer is a good follow up, at least for where I’m at with my playing. I haven’t really started Creative Bassist yet, but it looks like a useful one, too.

I’m also planning to start a second loop of B2B, but with a pick this time.

I’m enjoying The Groove Trainer course. Some day I’ll buy more TalkingBass courses. Simple Steps To Sight Reading seems interesting (it is a very extensive course). The Creative Bassist sounds very interesting and useful too!

Curious to know some more about your experience with the groove trainer course… am definitely tempted by it

I’m about a third of the way through Groove Trainer volume 1, I think? I finished part 1 and somewhere in the middle of part 2.

Part 1 is mainly theory, part 2 are the grooves themselves. So far the grooves aren’t very difficult, but there’s also some instruction to go along with each one. Mark’s approach is more academic than Josh’s and you’re expected to do your own homework, but there’s a lot of information there.

I haven’t started Creative Bassist yet, just watched the intro video and skimmed the PDF, but it looks a lot like if you were to take B2B’s Module 15 and expand it into an entire course.

Has it been worth it for you so far?

Yes, I think so.

You should always have the access.

With B2B and all TalkingBass courses, you pay once and you have lifetime access to the content. In other words, buy once/own forever.

They are not subscription-based like some other online courses.

Groove trainer is a great course. I’m at lesson 39 in module one and am definitely finding more difficulty. Highly recommend :sign_of_the_horns:t2:
