What is the best rock bass? Is it the Classic P? The T-Bird? Or something else? Need info for advice for a friend. He’s intermediate, and he loves the Who. A lot.
I submit, the Epiphone Viola
From what I see on Equipboard, John Entwistle used a lot of different basses. So, you could tell your friend to get one that they like best. ![]()
I’d say the best rock bass is the one that’s turned up super loud and plugged into a loud-as-$%#* amp that (preferably) is tube driven, so it’s fuzzing out.
(Otherwise, with a bit-o distortion on it.)
P bass
J bass
Stingray
T-bird
Rick…
They are all lousy rock basses if they’re played quietly and politely.
They’re all amazingly rocking when they’re fuzzy and loud!
I realize this may not be helpful at all, and I apologize for that.
But I have too many favorite rock players and styles in too many genres with too many different basses to throw down with a single bass.
However.
They all play through the Ampeg SVT into a giant 8x10 cabinet.
That, to me, is the real holy grail.
The Warwick Rockbass, obviously. Just like the Jazz bass is the best bass for jazz ![]()
Can’t go wrong with a P bass, but get something versatile. People play all of them even Hofners and Danelectro Longhorns
lol
serious? edit: oh, I get it now.
your right in some way though!
Actually yes, In my jam group we play Black Sabbath, KISS, ZZTOP, The Beatles,Guns n Roses and everything in between and the Epiphone Viola does it all
Don’t sell yourself short.

Cheers,
What I mean is that the Viola has great tones and can be made to sound any way you want it to.
I knew that. Just having a bit of fun on Sunday afternoon. ![]()
Huh, I never knew it was that versatile!
