I’ve seen these DR Black Beauty strings, and I’m super curious how they sound/hold up. Love the black ones.
IMO - you get them when you want a color look, not for how they sound. Not my thing but others have success with them.
So are you saying they don’t affect the sound?
I assume they will deaden brightness to a degree like tape wounds do, but not as much. But I don’t know, I haven’t had a chance to use coated strings myself.
Have a listen for yourself to see how they compare:
Good catch! Thanks!
They do in fact affect sound.
I recently put Black Beauties on my bass just for the aesthetics, and I do love the look.
I didn’t think to record a comparison, but there was a noticeable difference in sound. Lost some of the high end for sure. I wouldn’t say it was a drastic difference, not like putting on flats. I haven’t used other coated or wound strings but I imagine the difference has to be similar.
On the one hand I bought a Stingray specifically for its bright slap tone, so from that perspective these strings are maybe not the best choice. On the other hand, it does still have plenty of that bright tone, and I certainly don’t feel like it was a bad choice either. They sound good.
I can tell the coating will eventually wear off where I pluck. I can already see it happening after just a few weeks, though it isn’t very noticeable. I have to look up close to see it and it’s hard to even get a picture of.
If you love the aesthetics of them I think they’re worth a try. They’re just strings. Easy to change and not super expensive.
Dull and muted-ish for a round wound but they sure look great. Like @John_E said you don’t get them for how they sound. This is Neon not glow in the dark
