Computer monitor display input question

HDMI (out) to Display Port (in)
“no signal” error/ message.

I am hoping folks here can assist with a video interface question/ problem between my laptop and a new monitor. I am hoping to be able to use my laptop along with a separate monitor for my bass practice studio; I want to use both monitors (the stand-alone monitor and laptop screen.)

I use the laptop with a drop-in docking station in my home office with 3 monitors (2 separate ones on stands and the laptop monitor itself) and it works fine. The docking station interfaces to the monitors that utilize the DVI-D format (plug) input to those monitors.

For the new monitor in my studio I will using the same office laptop but I will not be using a docking station; I want to use the Display Port type input on the monitor (it has the other plug-in ports as well.) My laptop only has an HDMI output.

For the studio set-up with the single separate stand alone monitor, I purchased a connection adapter (see images below) and I can physically connect an HDMI cable from the laptop into the adapter which can then connect into the display input port on the monitor.
I can physically connect it all but I have no input signal to the monitor- a display shows up indicating a “no signal” error/ message.

I try to run through the menu of inputs on the monitor to try and manually select the input type. I cannot see the selection type for manual input nor does the “auto-select” input feature show up.

There are the other older typical VGA and DVI-D plugs on the new monitor but I do not have any interface cables to convert HDMI (laptop output) to one of the plug (inputs) on the monitor.

I am not too savvy with interface cables and am not sure if there are different types with many different (internal) connection options (maybe I purchased an incorrect adapter??)
This is the adapter I bought: DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter

The monitor is a Dell 17" and the laptop is a 6 year old Dell Precision 7720, Xenon processor, 1G SSD, 64G RAM and a decent video card.

I hope what I typed above describe my situation…
…any input (no pun) is appreciated.

Pretty sure this is the problem with your adapter:

(It’s intended to take a DisplayPort source and send it to an HDMI input on your monitor, not the other way around.)

ETA: Something like this should sort you out

Got it, that makes sense. Thanks for picking up and pointing out the (non) directionality…
…and for the recommendation.

The Amazon return is in process as well as the new recommended purchase alternative.

I will report back when new item is received.

You should be good to go with it, and it’s got everything you need. If you had just bought the opposite adapter, you would still have had to pick up a DisplayPort cable to go between the adapter (which would plug directly into the HDMI port on your laptop) and the monitor, unless you just happen to have one lying around.

I do not have any other computer peripheral accessories at my disposal. I inherited the monitor from my physical (go to) office since the business was downsizing (office size, not employees.)

At one time we had some 20 “butts-in-seats” but more colleagues are working remotely and we have only 3 now in the home office. There was so much office stuff that we HAD to get rid of, we gave away or tossed many items… I grabbed one of these monitors and there was so many other cables laying around that our IT took most of it (he had first right of refusal.) I could have gotten a correct cable back from him, but the amazon purchase will arrive sooner.

I could have rightfully grabbed one, but not knowing what all the mess and minutia that was available I really had no idea what I needed.

Thanks again for the keen technical “IT” eye.

Success!
I received the recommended cables today, kudos to @fennario .

I can now get a corner of the lower level turned into a little studio area… …perhaps when I gussy it up a bit more than this it might be worthy to post it in the “Show Us Your Practice Space” thread:

(extra credit goes to anyone who can identify the sheet music on that big beautiful screen… hint: I will be spending quite a bit of time with her )

We had a similar situation with the wife’s work laptop, and did pretty much the same thing as @Frank_Beard. Never realized that the cable is not bidirectional.

Of course, I also always have to remind myself that the signal is going from the laptop to the monitor, not the other way around. Everything else sends signal into the laptop, so monitors are backwards.
