That looks like a very high action to me. Mine is about 2.25mm at the 12th fret, for comparison, which is medium/low.

However acoustics might use different action height, not sure. Only ever played one.

Ah, didn’t put 2 and 2 together and realise it was an acoustic bass.

Yes, the acoustic basses tend to have a higher action. Plus most of them, you can’t alter the action at the bridge, unless you use tools and file it down (I think).

My acoustic bass is similar. I’ve played it long enough now to “know” how to use it with my fingers and thumbs, but yes, it’s always going to be harder than a standard electric bass for fretting and thumb pressure.

As usual, the answer is practice, practice, practice I think

(Or buy an electric bass as well  )

There’s really not one place or orientation to put your thumb, generally your thumb will be higher near the nut and drop lower as you approach the body (as Adam Neely demonstrates in the previously posted video). If you look at Strandberg guitars, their necks are not symmetric The Endurneck

If you haven’t seen it, this is Adam Neely’s followup to his safe left hand technique video where he talks more about the position of the left hand and using one finger per fret https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix0mj2fyIpE Here’s another video of his where he talks about thumb placement https://youtu.be/u-I1475hK_s

The orientation of the thumb is not so important as keeping the wrist mostly straight, keeping your wrist and hand relaxed and not having a death grip on the neck.

Yep. The neutral position is critical; everything else is secondary.
