Loving the new update, Josh!
First time posting on the forum, but I’m about 10 modules in after discovering your channel on YouTube. I learned classical guitar for 6 years from the age of 10, moved to electric, only really dabbled in bass and keys in various bands and it’s been a long while since taking any kind of structured tuition.
I’ve always loved the often underestimation of bass and how good it feels to prove people wrong, or you know…just be in on the secret. But I digress…
I decided I wanted to go right back to basics, learn to play with proper technique (it was surprising how natural it felt to actually pluck with fingers after having only really played with a pick. Guess that’s my classical guitar training coming in handy 20+ years later!)
Loving the course and it’s instantly made me feel much more competent. Logging in today and checking out the upgrade is very exciting and actually makes me want to go back and restart all over again!
Great update! Loving the new look & feel.
I finished the course a while ago but why not go revisit the brand-new modules and lessons! After all, our lizard brains love shiny new things, am I right @JoshFossgreen?
enjoying the course so far, im on module 4 at the moment. after just starting to learn i find myself watching other bass players more, and ive realised i want to end up playing with a pick. i get that im learning ‘the correct way’ of playing with 2 finger plucking, but is there anywhere in the course that will help me transition over to playing with a pick?
thanks
Thanks y’all! Will get the typo and the Imperial clock fixed soon.
There’s a pick masterclass @sadexpunk which recommends some lessons you can go back and try with a pick! But the course is primarily biased towards fingerstyle for the reasons I explain early in Module 1.
just been looking at the ‘extras’, in particular the 100 songs to practice. ive experimented with the different views, however, when i click the icon at top right, it tries to open something called ‘noteflight’ but then says it ‘refuses to connect’.
is this maybe an app that plays the song for you to play along with? and why will it not connect for me? problem with my laptop maybe?
thanks
EDIT: just been googling, looks like i may need a log-in. when i go to sign up i have an option of personal use, or ‘my teacher uses noteflight in a class’.
do you have any advice on this please? do i need a log-in to play along to the 100 songs in the extras?
thanks
I play about 50% with fingers, but the majority of what I listen to is done with pick (post-punk, punk, post hardcore, shoegaze). I’ve done the course both ways. In my very humble opinion, I think that’s the way to do it unless you’ve played guitar for years and picks are already second nature (in which case, I’d suggest focusing on fingers for awhile). Picks are just a tool for you as a musician, and being able to choose the best tool for a particular job will only help you.
Lots of bass players use picks. Chris Squire one of my heroes used a pick. Ian Hill, another bassist I look up to, uses a pick. Be yourself wherever that leads.
You can do the course using a pick, doing a downstroke when alternate plucking calls for the index finger, and upstroke calls for middle finger
There’s a couple songs I’m working on that were originally done with picks. I’m working them with fingers because I’ll get them nailed a lot quicker that way.
Then later when my pick skills are better, I can revisit them “properly”
I don’t believe you need a specific noteflight login. I don’t know where your specific problem would come from - are you logged into the course? Tagging @JoshFossgreen in case he has ideas or has seen it before…
I’ll echo everyone else, the update is very nice. I restarted the course since I was only in part 5 of the second module. The additional instruction on hand/finger placement was very helpful.
to answer a few other questions, yes im logged into the course. and im running chrome on an old macbook. ive never used this noteflight thing from here before, im still exploring what the course offers me so thought id see what the free songs were all about.
ill try the incognito thing when i get a bit of time, maybe also try firefox instead of chrome.
EDIT: this is what i get when i try firefox. so it implies that the very fact that bassbuzz has embedded the site is stopping me from viewing it. doesnt make sense to me but then again im not very IT savvy
gee whiz…I have just celebrated my FIRST anniversary with BB…no t’s or hoodies??? nuts, I was hoping to sport one around. Seriously Josh, I am sooooo happy I found BB! I’m ready to start the lessons for another go around…the first year has been great fun and lots of learning!! THANK YOU JOSH!!
@sadexpunk thanks for the report, that’s definitely a bug, you shouldn’t need a login to view the Noteflight player that loads up the tabs. Should be fixed soon!
EDIT - we haven’t been able to replicate the issue, can you send more browser/OS info here please? - Contact Us | BassBuzz.com
I think you’ve nailed it! I never even really noticed that icon and only after you posted did I check it and I get the exact same thing. As you say just ignore the icon and hit the play button and/or the speed up slow down buttons!
@JoshFossgreen maybe it would save confusion if that icon could be removed though I do understand that it is probably generated by the Noteflight player not you!
@Morkai thanks, thats really helpful. im new to this so thought id click each icon to see what they did, i didnt realise everything i needed was already there. so i guess you dont need my OS/browser info now then @JoshFossgreen ?
thanks guys.
