Cover suggestions for beginner/intermediate jam

A couple of friends and I are booking a practice room for a jam in a week or so. The guitarist is decent (been playing for years) and the drummer is also OK I think. I’m a late beginner (not quite early intermediate perhaps) on bass. We haven’t jammed together before and are trying to come up with some easy-ish songs to cover. We’re mostly into British and American alternative rock/indie from the 90s onwards, so we’re thinking maybe some Nirvana for example. But equally something completely outside that genre might be fun - thinking pop / disco / funk / dunno. Probably not metal

Any good suggestions for us?

Have you signed up to the B2B course? If so you’ll have access to the top 50 songs which have levels (easy, medium, harder). There are plenty of songs in the genres you mention (including Nirvana) that might inspire you (also give you the tab and score). If you haven’t signed up then you can find the song list Spotify under BassBuzz. Cheers

Yes I have, and that’s a good idea, thanks! I’ll check the list.

Constantine is my best resource for bass tab (note his website has even more than Youtube).

Radiohead Creep
David Bowie Let’s Dance
Smashing Pumpkins Tonight Tonight

Of course there are infinite great options here, but just thinking of some songs in the style you are looking for that I know are easy basslines (because I know how to play them) while also being great songs that your jam mates might also enjoy playing. Good luck!

Bloodletting by Concrete Blonde is a good one.

Rock and Indie from the 90s, I got a few for you:
The Cranberries - Zombie (the first song I ever learned fully on bass, easy bassline)
Bush - Swallowed
Bush - Glycerine
The Pixies - Where is My Mind? (that one is from the 70s, but I thought for so many years it was from the 90s, probably because of Fight Club)

1988 actually, you were close with the '90s guess

Where Is My Mind is a great shout actually, thanks. Love that song.

Oh, thanks. My mind seems to now have made it older than it is. Maybe I was surprised when I realised it is 11 years older than Fight Club (1999) and my brain started exaggerating.

This might sound like troll but first song I ever learned was Spooky Scary Skeletons

Savage Garden To the moon and back is also pretty beginner friendly.

Daft Punk - One more time
Daft Punk - Something about us
Stardust - Music sound better with you
Outkast - Hey ya
Dua lipa - Levitating
Gorillazz All of them
Modjo - Lady

When you get more proficient try
Daft Punk - Instant Crush
Jamiroquai - Runaway
Crazytown - Butterfly

If you like slappity
Outkast - Mrs Jackson
Patrice rushen - Forget me nots

I can go on…

Now there’s a resource worth spending some time on. :+1: :+1: :+1:

Do you have the URL link for his website - I could not find it on his YouTube channel.

@Celticstar according to the header in his YouTube channel, it’s:

A couple that my garage band has been successful with that meet your criteria are:

  • Foo Fighters - Big Me
  • Decemberists - Down by the Water
  • Gin Blossoms - Found Out About You
  • Soul asylum - Runaway Train

And if you’re willing to reach a little further back, The Breakup Song by the Greg Kihn Band is fun and everyone can sing on it.
All of these have the added advantage of YouTube bass tutorials with tab.

Thank you.

I have noticed lately when I get some of the Wndows 10 upgrades it changes some app settings in the registry without asking me.

I use Firefox for my main internet browser but in the last six months there are some sites I have to use Microsoft Edge or else I can’t get in. And no I am not going to porn sites. For example, I use the internet to renew my library books and reserve books. This only works in Microsoft Edge now.

Before I posted my question I did look in the header of his YouTube channel but there was nothing there.
I did not try Edge which I guess I should have.
Sorry for the inconvenience and again, thank You so much for posting the link.

Don’t apologize; I’m always happy to help :relaxed: For what it’s worth: I’m using Google Chrome on my Android phone to access the forums and many other sites. On my laptop, I’m using Microsoft Edge (which shares its engine with Chrome). If a certain website doesn’t work in a particular browser, that may be because a. the site developers deliberately coded the site in such a way that it doesn’t work in that browser, or b. the browser in question is outdated. Windows 10 updates or upgrades don’t change anything on your device to reduce the functionality of third-party browsers. You may have to update Firefox on your device to a newer version though.

Just thought I’d update on this, in case anyone’s interested. We had our jam last night and played:

Pixies - Where Is My Mind
The White Stripes - Hardest Button To Button (it does actually have a bassline!)
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Anemone

It was great fun. We started off pretty ragged but sounded half decent by the end.

One thing though, I didn’t have my amp with me so had to plug straight into the PA. I’d bought one of those well-thought-of-but-cheap Behringer pre-amp pedals (BDI 21) to help get a decent tone. But in order to hear myself, I had to turn up the level on the PA to the point where it was just a bit farty, no matter how I set my bass’s tone knob (Squier P bass) or the pre-amp’s dials. Is that just par for the course - the PA being not quite powerful enough? Or is it more like me not knowing enough to dial in a ‘good’ tone?
