It’s that time of year again.
The time of year where every kid’s school has an auction to raise money.
I’ve really like this event at my kids’ school, and I’ve been in the auction band every year since my youngest started kindergarden.
I love the band, I love the group of parents that gets together and makes a whole set of music happen, it’s heaps of fun.
But.
What do you do as the bassist when a song is called that you do not like?
That you may, in fact, loathe.
Curious if you’ve been in the scenario and how you deal with it.
I have a (cough, cough) friend who might be dealing with this right now.
This is funny. I feel you. What I’ve found is songs that I really hate, once I start learning them, I find some little nuance in the bassline that makes me like the songs more.
Heartbreaker and Because the night were my 2. Now I really like Because the night since I can play it. Heartbreaker is pretty cool too but the bridge or solo or whatever you want to call it is still a little rough for me.
I’m just glad there are no Smiley Virus or Taylor not so Swift songs in the setlist. (sorry/not sorry to any fans )
The kids also sing “go back to Ohio” with Seven nation army so it might be a good pick for the younger crowd. There is/was a Tic Tok top 40 chart out there for music. I suggested it to our guys that we should grab 80-2010’s songs from there that fit
I use that to negotiate adding another song to the set list that I really like but other band members aren’t crazy about. (Maybe some Taylor Swift for @MattyD).
EDIT: or, better, @MattyD, check out Flowers by Miley Cyrus. That is a really fun bass line!
100% this.
It’s the biggest reminder to me of how important experience and appreciation is in understanding something that you may hold a strong gut reaction to.
Interesting the universal hate for Freebird, it is not a song that gets played a lot here so maybe there isn’t that level of “familiarity”.
Why is Cocaine on the list? Because it is repetitive?
Same with Apache? I haven’t played the bass line but can play the guitar part a little and I grew up listening to the Shadows
I think it’s the meme of it at this point. Personally, I love the song. Then again, I live a couple miles away from the famous Brickyard Road. I went to school with a Van Zant daughter (almost dated her…long story). Ronnie’s brothers (Johnny and Donnie) were both customers at the vet’s office my wife worked at. I’ve run into and chatted with Johnny and Donnie on multiple occasions. They’re kind of low key royalty around here but you’d never know seeing them.
I’ve had that happen too Believe it or not … I used to despise both … Fleetwood Mac … and RUSH … HATED them … ( I was young and DUMB ) … as i matured … and learned respect for what I was hearing … Yah … LOVE em.
Songs I hate now are because they get PLAYED TO DEATH …
Annoying…. Annoying as hell…… All that comes to mind when playing that song is…… some sick minded pervert sittin’ on the crapper in a bathroom stall reading graffiti and fantasizing……
