Dirty Pots

The stacked tone pot on my SR300 has gotten dirty over the years (it’s a 2009), and is really scratchy when adjusted.

Back in the day, my dad was an audiophile with a stereo system that cost more than my car. He would use tuner cleaner when his stereo pots would get dirty.

Is that something which can be done on bass pots? Or is it time to replace the pot?

Deoxit or any electrical contact cleaner will work.

+1 on deoxit. It only needs a very small amount.

Often you can clean them with just twisting and no cleaner though. Just twist it to the max in each direction about 50 times and it might clean up just from that.

This happens to all pots eventually. Dust, moisture, etc get in there and just periodically need cleaning. Depends more on your environment than anything else.

I’ve never tried Deoxit, sounds like good stuff, but I’ve brought pedal pots back from the dead with WD-40 Contact cleaner. It’s cheap, readily available, works great, and a little goes a long way.
