Rock is alive and well and never has left as far as I’m concerned. But then again, I’m 64 years old, so….

IMHO if you’re gonna call yourself a musician no matter what instrument you play you’ll learn to be competent in more than a single genre. IME most rock is just a variation on roots blues with some variations as to tempo, time signatures, “feel”, etc. A bassist is using the same basic tools he or she is just applying them differently to fit a specific genre of rock.

Bass played with R&B/Soul and Funk isn’t all that different. It’s still just basic blues played with a different “feel”. Reggae has very different feel playing off the back beat/the two count but the notes are all the same. It’s only how they’re played that differs from one genre to the next. I’ve always believed bass is 90% timing and “feel” and only 10% the notes.
