Drooling while playing bass

I just watched this episode of Hot Ones with Flea. In it he mentions getting to a point while playing bass where you are thinking about nothing else and you’re just in the zone and you start to drool. (@ 13:50 in the video)

I was so happy he said that. That happens to me especially when I’m trying to learn a particularly hard bass line. I’ll end up with drool on my shirt. And I always think “how gross, what is going on.” But apparently it must be a thing. It only happens when I play bass. Not while playing the drums, not when I took piano lessons. Does this happen to anyone else?

That is how you tell the stage is level right- bass player drools out of both sides of his mouth.
 :joy: :smiling_face_with_tear:

I’ll see myself out

I’m guilty of this but not in a very very long time.

LOL, not while playing but when I do the mod and so focus sometimes I caught myself starting to do that. I remember the first few times I had to solder the pot and it’s not sticking it happens, ha ha.

Only if I doze off while I’m playing.

Well certain toons such as Light My Fire and Riders on the Storm can induce a near hypnotic state whilst waiting for the keyboard to finish their thing… then you are late for the change and awake again.

LMAO no, I never drool while in the zone. I mean, I have definitely been in the headspace where there is nothing else happening except the music, but it’s never left me needing a bib!

Don’t worry Gene Simmons does it too :relieved:

Apparently this joke is very popular between musicians here in Finland, and I thought it was a local joke. Apparently not!

When I told a singer friend that I started to learn to play bass, she and her husband wanted to tell me every bassist joke they know, and every joke had something to do with drooling. I couldn’t figure out how or why these drooling jokes were invented. Now it seems some bassists really drool while playing!? Why bassists? Don’t guitar players drool? :joy:

Maybe it’s fortunate that singers don’t drool while singing - can you imagine? Or drummers - the drool would fly everywhere! :joy:

Jonathon Groff, the celebrated Broadway/TV star, is notorious for drool when he sings. It is readily visible during his performance in Hamilton, when he plays King George.

Not only do I drool when I play, I also start to nod off too. Not even when I’m playing something slow or that I know well. Chugging away at 140bpm and I’m trying to keep my eyes open.

@faydout It sounds like playing is very relaxing to you! Do you mean you start to fall asleep? It would be interesting to set up a camera and find out whether you keep playing after falling asleep. Maybe some people speelwalk, and some sleep-play

I wonder whether it is more or less expensive to get a seat at the front row (splatter zone)
