Hello all!
I am looking for a drop tuner to tune my Schecter 5 string bass down to A. It seems like this is the best option from Hipshot for my needs: GB7 Bass Xtender – Hipshot Products. is that correct? If not, what would you recommend- preferably available on musicians friend as I have $130 of points to use
Thanks!
That is the best way to do it.
But…do you need it?
These are great for switching on the fly, but of course you can just do it by hand unless you need to switch fast in the middle of a tune or performance.
This is what they are really for.
Otherwise, the are just GAS fun.
Agreed, you can do it by hand - but the switch seems so much more convenient. I’d be curious to know how stable the tuning is after you flip the switch on one of these.
I see a use-case for when you go back and forth between tunings, e.g. in bands like Rage Against the Machine, where you have quite a few standard and drop-D tunings/songs.
Cheers,
Antonio
I have them on a couple basses.
Once set up properly they work flawlessly.
Don’t pluck that low A near the ocean. You may cause a tsunami.
it takes literally seconds to tune down without one
I love tuning and retuning my bass into different configurations.
I would say, get a tuner pedal / clip on / whatever (if you don’t already).
Tune manually when you need to.
Then use your points to buy a heap of accessories (new strings, nice strap, and picks) or a new pedal (fuzz, delay, whatever) or stock it up for later and get another instrument.
I’ve played a lot and in a lot of tunings and have never understood the need for an instantaneous drop tuner.
Happy to be convinced that it’s a necessary mod, but my experience says tune with your ear/tuner, and buy other cool bass toys.
Yeah agree, it’s just so fast to tune down and back up with a good tuner. Invest in a better tuner if anything.
