E string clank

Hi folks - did a quick search to see if others have mentioned but did not find so pardon the new topic if already addressed somewhere else. Finished Josh’s course several months ago and try to practice every day - making progress! But, keep hearing the darn E string clanking against the frets whenever I’m fingering or plucking. Not at all noticeable on the other strings. Is this normal? Thinking it’s my technique and/or neck set up. Playing a Fender J-bass with roundwounds. Any views on this much appreciated - thanks!

Have you checked neck relief and string height? Plucking too hard?

Low fret in one spot? Agreed with above reply. Check relief and if straight you might have the action on the E a bit too low.

when was the last time / or any time your bass had a proper setup?

search the forum here for how-tos if you have-not yet.

Appreciate all the input - and good call on the setup! I bought this bass used and was so eager to start playing I’d forgotten to setup properly. Turns out the neck was about a 1/4 turn too straight and string action too low. Found this pro online with very good instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0Fe5ChSKkg&list=PLlPpM79AG4w4W7GSyjyMstC1QFbvoD7Ms&index=11&t=726s

Happy playing

Stopped watching when I saw the weight of the bass resting on the cord/jack. Glad you got it fixed. If you use a strap and an angled cord, learning how to solder and replace the output jack will not be necessary. Lol
