What are people’s thoughts on EUBs?
I am double bass curious but have the problem of nowhere to house one, plus they can get a bit expensive. I see Ali has some affordable Electric ones and, quality discussion aside, I am interested to hear thoughts from those who have one as to whether they are worthwhile etc.
For me, for example, a reason I would like an acoustic one would be that I like to feel the instrument when it is played, one reason I loved my viola when I had a nice one
The Yamaha is where it’s at.
I played @PamPurrs before she passed when I went to visit her and would have bought it in a flash but I gut said “go acoustic”, so I eventually did. It was fantastical, just perfection
She had others before and they were toys compared(per her). My old instructor gigs with his Yamaha and a PJB-120 all the time. It’s pro level.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned on the upright, is that you really have to get to know the instrument to play in tune, so buy once and save headaches later
EUBs comes in all sizes and flavors. I have the Ibanez, same 34" scale. Action can be setup pretty low. You can go the Acoustic route with old school action and sound, Yamaha would be my first choice as well.
EUBs seem to be gaining in popularity in the Bluegrass world for touring acts. I think it has more to do with feedback issues in the various rooms. It can be a tough problem to tackle. My englehardt absolutely hates electric guitar and I end up shoving a nerf football behind the tail piece to tame it. It kills sustain and tone but it puts more emphasis on the attack which is what we want anyway. Acoustics are inconveniently cool. Never really messed around with an electric.
