Eh. QC issues happen, even to the best. No one has a perfect day every time. Some brands are way better - Sire, Yamaha, G&L, etc… but these are all still mass produced items.
I have been learning my knobs on my P7. I have also noticed-just today- that with the stacked knobs do not turn independently. It goes back for a 6 month check after purchase in the next few weeks. I will definitely bring it to their attention. Can you tell me what the fix was so I can communicate it to my guitar store?
The easy fix was to pull the top knob off of the stack, and then press it back on, but leave enough room so that it doesn’t interfere with the knob below it on the same stack. This worked out fine for me, so I didn’t try to bend anything. I did find a write-up of a guy who did, but having a hard time finding it now.
That’s prolly not a good idea on the BB734A. If and really if you feel like you want to upgrade the pickup maybe consider the Delano. The white on is especially delicious. the Yamaha preamp is already specially wired for extra passive tone control in addition to the 3 band eq. I wouldn’t touch it.
It’s deep, tight and very much in your face tone. I just love it. As the matter of fact I’ve been thinking about it if I’d ever want to change. It’s straight swap you don’t even need to solder just splice it with the solder sleeve.
I far prefer Ebony over Maple, with only few exceptions that call for Maple.
I have two Maple-neck basses. My Sire U5 didn’t offer Rosewood, Pau Ferro, etc. My V8 requires Maple to stay true to Marcus’s root design, plus it’s Roasted Maple, which naturally sports a darker color than pale Maple.
I realize mileage varies on this from player to player, but just my prefs.
Personally - I think the 734a’s pickups are just fine as they are. Definitely very high quality AlNiCo pickups, and while I usually prefer ceramics, I have no problem getting these where I need them to go. I wouldn’t swap mine out and I am someone that kicks mediocre pickups to the curb immediately.
Yes, the Jazz is not noise canceling; welcome to the world of P/J. I don’t find its J pickup any worse than any other J I have owned for noise (and it is definitely better than my Warwicks were). It’s a nonissue for me but YMMV.
Understanding this, you just dial the bridge pickup back until you’ve got a good mix of the 2 (mine is somewhere between 70/30 to 80/20) and it gets rid of almost all of the hum.
I wandered into the 734 thread and never clarified, but I have a 434. Since it’s pretty classic passive VVT I think the only downside to changing the pick-ups is spending money to not sound any better, except for the electrical noise reduction.
Yup. Also - it’s a good idea to track down what is causing the EM noise in your environment, because often you can (and should) fix it - and if not, it’s at least good to understand it.
Mine was entirely caused by my gaming PC being really electrically noisy.
