Oh no I’m just saying if those pups are getting pulled… I’ve been thinking about buying a neck, building a body and using my old Ibanez hardware but the p pickup was garbage.
Alrighty then… I just wanna say ya boi and do it. Ill know tonight, if I get it I’ll post the beginnings of my bass stable when I get home.
That may mean an overnighter, a real bass adventure.
Tbh, I dig G&L’s but that Fender looks more interesting to me. I’m digging on that bridge pickup.
Maybe go for one of the X options.? It sounds so much better!
Being new, having a bass with fewer options can be a good thing. Until you’re ready for all the knobs and preamps and bits and bobs, a really solid bass with a really great sound that just works is a godsend. Same idea with P basses. They’re a 1 trick pony but that 1 trick is a really good trick.
I love that quote…
Unless it’s a fender or Squier you may run into more problems every dimensions than you want you deal with starting with the fitting of the neck pocket, then the alignment of the pickups to the strings.
Next is the thickness of the neck heel, will that be I the adjustment range of the bridge. Also if the neck is long enough or within range to adjust intonation. Is it 20, 21, 22, or 24 frets.
Even made in USA necks and bodies don’t necessarily match up in terms of length.
Too much to cover so just be aware of potential hivkuos.
Sorry
I have to say that there’s no confusion or impediment for a newbie to have or use an active bass. Most good quality active basses have the capability to be set to be played in active or passive mode.
Another option is to play in active mode with treble, mids and bass knobs centered at the detent (12 o’clock) position.
Whenever, if ever, a newbie wants to experiment with tone controls, the knobs are there for the tweaking. No harm, no foul. The center detent position is always there to go back to home base: no EQ at all.
Personally, I prefer the option of having a preamp on a bass and not using it rather than not having a preamp and needing one. YMMV
I have a j and a p, do you have favored settings for these?
If so please give some settings pointers.
I am not using any pedals and running through a Kustom kba35x, a nice clean little amp.
Preamp settings are situational and personally preferential, meaning that good settings for cutting through a mix in a band situation often sound wrong when playing bass strictly for yourself or to a backing track.
All to say, a big part of playing around with a preamp is experimenting with its tonal possibilities. Just tweak a knob solo, then in combos with other knob tweaks, and use your ears. Does that mean an epiphany will occur? Maybe not. But you’ll have fun experimenting and learning what YOU like as your fave tone. Or tones.
And you can alway set every knob back to the detent neutral position or play passive. It’s a multifaceted solution.
With both the p and j I’m still seeking the best ways.
On the p I’m pick up knob often at around 90% and the tone often 5%ish 10% max.
The j mostly neck pick up 90% bridge 10 -20% tone not much, but I’m searching for tone almost always.
The j is fairly sensitive and a few percent change makes a big difference.
Still looking…
When I purchased my bass I wanted options/versatility that I can evolve into. I has been about 6 months and I just starting experimenting with my knobs. ( I get confused with what does what). I have a spot now where I am happy with the sound. My music teacher states that my bass sounds better than the one he plays at our lessons! As for my amp, everything is mid range for the long long time being. I’m happy,
Here is a Z7 review by Bully the Thakidd. He has his own signature bass. (Lobster Lady has done a review on his bass).
Stock usually where you should start. Everything in the center. In terms of Passive bass the tone knob only cuts if you put it in the center then you have less and more. On active there’s a center detent that’s your zero starting point for boost and cut.
I notice that many electric string players have really bad habits of making adjustment even before even play the first note. It took me over a year to relearn how to not touch anything and play the bass as stock as possible. Once you know that “vanilla” tone on each bass adjusting to the song gets much easier.
Playing at home you could play just about any tone that suits your ears. Many who just starting out prefer the feel and the tone of flats string because it’s more forgiving with finger noises and also offer “bass” sound also it sounds like what you hear on the audio track.
It’s when you start playing with others, you’d discover that the round wound brightness can be very helpful pushing your tone out in front and be heard through the mix. You’d also have more tonal options and can throw in different techniques to accent your playing.
I’m in no way saying flats are for beginners as many bass legends plays exclusively with Flats.
My local guitar shop can bring it in for 959$ + 13% tax-Canadian. Local distributer has white with ebony in stock! It is probably pretty similar to Germany prices with shipping, exchange and probably duties. I am happy and want to support local businesses and don’t mind spending a few more bucks for local support.
I have asked for a few extra’s in the negotiations. Wish me luck.
Yeah! That’s great, @Linda! So happy for you. Here’s to you loving your new Z.
Stick to your guns and ask for as much as you can from your local dealer.
Chances are good they have some wiggle room that could save you money and/or get you some good goodies. My dad taught me long ago: “Always ask! The worst they can say is no.”
Best of luck!
Awesome! This is a good choice, Sire makes great instruments for the price.
Yeah, dumping all but the HB, it is a better mod platform, and I took the money and got a Z7 4 string, I think that will be more versatile for me for now. Until I have become really good I can wait to get a 5 String version of whatever tickles my fancy. I might be able to talk her into just 3 then. LOL
That is what I did get the Z7, but only the 4 string dump all the others except the HB 25th Enhanced for a mod platform.
