Man, this is just dumb.
I was waiting for you to comment on this statement, Mike <3
He dislikes playing it ā kick it to the curb immediately. His instinct is spot on. He can always repurchase later if he decides he likes 5ās after all. There is NO reason to keep gear you donāt gel with.
The obvious answer is keep the ones you like the most. So, one of the Bentons and the Sterling.
@weedhopper, follow your gut and do whatever feels best to you. You stated the V7 should go. So be it: Itās entirely your decision.
But you asked for opinions. Personally, I agree with @Al1885, a guy with demonstrable playing experience and expertise with tons of basses.
I agree 100% with the quality of the bass - itās by far the highest quality instrument in the list, and I think Sire is a truly great choice to try.
But if you try it and donāt like it, it makes no sense to keep it. Iāve sold some wonderful instruments that I simply did not mesh with after a couple months of trying. Itās the best course of action if you need to trim down.
But thatās just the challenge: some people can play any bass (@Al1885), others are comfortable with certain basses.
Itās like buying shoes that are great, well made, good for dancing and size 7. But you have size 11 and want to runā¦
Makes no sense to buy the dancing shoesā¦
Iām going to make this weird:
- Keep the V7, sell the other 3.
- Buy a bass with the money you make from that sale.
Sire MM is a keeper.
Iād aim for a Spector⦠but depends on how much you get from the sales.
Keeping a bass that you actively dislike is indeed very weird
I did say weirdā¦
While my thoughts are aligned with @MikeC I recognize that not everyone is like me. In fact if it wasnāt for Covid Iād most likely be like everyone else or still an aspiring drummer, So you gotta do what you gotta do.
Even when itās pointed out to you, any single revelation that one would discover about bass guitar or playing come very slowly but profoundly. My distinct advantage is obvious, I get to play one song on every basses I own, well at least the one in the shed. That gives me such an insight on how the bass fits the song and vice versa.
Thatās how I discovered how and why I like the fast and nimble narrow jazz neck and how I love wider string spacing on a wider P bass or better yet StingRay.
I like to do car analogy and compare the jazz neck to a sport coupe, the p bass to a sedan, and the 5 string to an SUV. Off chance for a rare 6 string+ it would be like camperās van .
The funny thing is, were it me, Iād keep the Sire and give fives another shot. But I can recognize that @weedhopper is not me, and if he has come to the realization that he dislikes 5ās, then itās the obvious sale and his instinct is, IMO, spot on.
You only have 4?!?!
Iāve got 22 instruments just in the room Iām sitting in⦠and another 25 or so scattered throughout the house.
My experience with 4+(6 in my case) is that there is a steeper learning curve for those beginning to intermediate ⦠they require time to grow⦠and for the player to adapt.
Nowadays I have brainrot every single time I pickup my 4 string Sterling⦠not only for the 34āā but also for the absence of at least a B string.
I had zero problems playing mine, and the B string did not confuse me at all. And in fact I liked the flatter radius a lot. All in all it wasnāt a technical thing at all for me.
What I disliked (strongly) was the lower string spacing. I really like the 19mm bridge spacing on my instruments, and yes that 1-2mm actually makes a difference to feel.
Sell them all and get something really nice!

Actually a good option too, sell them all and get 1-2 nice basses.

Flatter radius is bliss. The comfort on my 6 is a dream.

Tbh, the lower string spacing has bothered me more, but indeed was hard, I would often fret two strings.

Or this!

Yeah, it just feels⦠wrong

Got a way to many basses, my wife says They got to go, I have a Marcus V7 5 String, Sterling SubRay4, Harley Benton JB-75MN NA, and Harley Benton Enhanced 25th. Which ones should go, I can keep 2 of them? Which would you recommend should go? I am sure the V7 should go, I have a hard time playing it due to 5 strings. The rest are a toss up. Help me rationalize keeping two of them.
Sell the v7 5 to get v8 4 oh yeah. Sell the other 3 to get a Ray34. That would be too cool
