This is a great option, sell all four and replace with a V8 4 string (or even better, a P8 ) and some other nice bass (Ray34 or otherwise).
That’s a killer plan. This thread prompted me to pick up my V8 and play it at a gallop. Damn, what a fine instrument it is. Its neck is amazing and its tones are simply great. A super-easy-playing, great sounding bass and astounding bang for the buck.
What I disliked (strongly) was the lower string spacing. I really like the 19mm bridge spacing on my instruments, and yes that 1-2mm actually makes a difference to feel.
This is the reason my 5 doesn’t get played more. I’d much prefer a 5 that had the same string spacing as a 4, even if it makes the neck as wide as a 6.

Yeah. I could play it just fine, it’s just that after a few months, I never did

I entertain the thought of modding my OLP 5 string to a massively wide 4 string for a spell but the thought of putting single bridge per string sound (at the time) like a lot of work
even if it makes the neck as wide as a 6.
Ask and ye shall receive… like this Warwick “broadneck” version:

To put things in perspective the pickups on the V7 and V8 are among the best of the OEM premium imports I rank it at the highest level along side the G&L MFD pickups and the preamps is out of this world cool as you dot see those features till you spend $1500+ 4 band EQ Active/ passive with passive tone control. Superb!
Yet, compared to other features on the bass I’d consider the pickups and electro to be the weakest That’s how value for dollar is so high. My only regret is the fact that too many people knows about it.
The Roasted Maple neck with very rolled edges on a V8 is fantastic as is the hardware. It’s a step above the V7’s. The Swamp Ash body is also a premium upgrade in comparison. As an added bonus, the V8 comes with a great soft-sided case (way better than a gig bag).
A V8 sells for $899. But I got mine from Pitbull Audio, which offers a 10% discount to first-time buyers. All in, with free shipping and no sales tax (to all non-Californians), I got mine for a grand total of $809.10.

I’m going to need to check the P8 out at some point because IMO it’s really tough to beat the Yamaha YGD’s or the Ibanez custom Nordys for stock pickups. Both companies have always produced outstanding stock pickups.
Yamaha YGD’s
I can’t do a side by side with the V7 or V8 pickups but I will be doing it for the G&L MFD’s Al mentioned. I’m a huge fan of those humbuckers so we’ll see.
Comparing humbuckers to PJs will be tricky but I’m totally interested in hearing your opinion.
Would going directly into the preamp with the only difference being the inputs (standard vs -15db) and playing the same thing be a decent enough test? I can play the first verse of Ted Just Admit It on both (something I noodle with all the time) as a control.
Well… humbuckers are pretty different than P/J really. More rounded and rich at the cost of being less punchy and dynamic. They will likely sound pretty different (but both really good).
Got a way to many basses, my wife says They got to go, I have a Marcus V7 5 String, Sterling SubRay4, Harley Benton JB-75MN NA, and Harley Benton Enhanced 25th. Which ones should go, I can keep 2 of them? Which would you recommend should go? I am sure the V7 should go, I have a hard time playing it due to 5 strings. The rest are a toss up. Help me rationalize keeping two of them.
Sell them all and buy a P Bass
I was waiting for this
Barney said, ‘Sell them all and buy a P bass.’
I concur… Totally…
A P bass seems quintessential.
However I would consider keeping the Ray 4, or sell them all and get a P and upgrade the Ray 4.
Yeah, hard time isn’t it. If I didn’t love her I would keep the basses. I Guess I have GAS problem, I am going to focus more on playing.
It’s good to have a good woman in our life that keeps us on track. At one point I had 7 motorcycles in the garage, two classic cars and three pickups. My wife, girlfriend at the time, basically helped me realized that I had a problem
Only you know which bases you reach for and enjoy the most. Market value of the instrument doesn’t not equal the enjoyment you get from it.

Humbuckers are life. Period.

I definitely dig them. Especially on guitar but also on bass; my first two basses were double-buck.
