Extreme gigs

Hi team,

I went on a pilgrimage to Poland last week (but that’s not really the point of this post).

My son and I brought along our bass and guitar, plus a Bose S1 Pro, to lead some singing along the way.

We ended up playing at some pretty unusual… places :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

• 1,500 meters, in the snow, under the sun with strong wind — total disaster… the instruments just wouldn’t stay in tune at all

• …and then at around 100 meters below ground, in the Wieliczka salt mine near Kraków

Here’s a photo from about -100m underground.

Any of you ever played at crazy altitudes or in unusual / extraordinary places?

That sounds so cool! Did you make any video or audio recording? I wonder how it sounded like.

If someday I visit Poland, the Wieliczka salt mine will be in my must visit list!

Is this going to lead to a series of bizarre photos? Kind of like extreme ironing?

I live at just below that altitude, 5300 ft, and played in an uninsulated garage in February. Does that count?

(I gave up trying to stay in tune after 20ish minutes)

The Salt mine sounds pretty cool, how did it sound?

I love this one !

My experience was not that extreme but I’m always open to new challenges

The challenge of the snow / Sun and Wind, probably more than altitude, was staying in tune (not to mention that the tuner had low battery (due to low temperature) and Sun+Snow made it very difficult to read the tuner screen…

And yes, 5300 ft in an uninsulated garage count as extreme

For the salt mine, we were allowed to do so as we celebrated a Mass in one of the chapel.

Fun fact, the security guard at the entrance looked at us, was super surprised to see us with the instruments, probably tried to figure out what was written in the procedure … and let us in without asking questions

As for the sound, nothing specific to mention we stayed in tune and the sound was OK

I don’t have recordings but overall we were more in survival mode

A friend of mine is a bass player and he played in a throw together band on our Guided Missile Cruiser in the middle of the Pacific on the way to the Persian Gulf for during the first Gulf War! I didn’t have time to do any of that except watch them play occasionally!
