Fender Dead Spots on the G String IIby GSR205?

Tired ot the dead spots on Ibaneze G on my Fender and Squier Jazz Basses. Want to go to a 5-string; anyone with an Ibanez GSR205 have the problem ?

Change your strings, excellent chance that’s the problem

I have the same dead spot on my P Bass and less so on my Jazz. It is the sixth fret on the G string. I read something about it is the resonance of the wood matching the note so it kills the sustain. It is supposedly common with 4 in line tuners and bokt on necks. Not much can be done about it. Changing strings doesn’t work. I love my Fenders and it is fine for a passing note but does not work for any type of sustain. Not sure what to do.

You could try adding weight to the headstock. A small clamp could do it. Here’s a demonstration of how noticeable it can be:

Also, try fretting the octave below (4th fret on A string) while you play that note. Not playing the lower octave, just having your finger on the fret. It’s kinda magic. The 6th fret on the G should sustain then.

Edit: This second suggestion is without adding weight to the headstock.

Another edit: Forgot I had a video for that too

Interesting. The weight would be the better option since I am trying to keep my hand in place to play the major scale in the key of E, staring on the 7th on the A string. I can try and find a weight that isn’t too obvious. Lol. Maybe that is what Paz does and hides it in a stuffed flower on the head stock. Lol

Here’s a pretty slick way of doing it, though it does involve making some modifications that you may or may not be comfortable with:

Not bad. I saw in the comments of the article that someone tried stainless steel strings and it helped and another mentioned heavier tuners. I may try some DR Highbeams on the next string change and then maybe some heavier tuners. Overall, I dont think it is big enough of an issue that I will drill the headstock. I can hear it everytime when I hit the note but I dont think most people notice. I play it for my wife and she doesn’t hear it. Lol.

I think I am going to order the Fwnder Fatfinger. It may or may not work but isn’t too expensive. Plus it looks better than a c clamp and keeps me from drilling holes in it. Lol.
