First post here. I’m looking for a Fender Precision Bass — not a super expensive one, but also not a cheap one — to complement my Fender Jazz Bass American Standard. I found a second-hand Made-in-Japan one here in Argentina (where gear is more expensive than almost anywhere else ) for US $1,500. I know it may sound crazy to most of you, but here it’s not a bad deal.
I tried to find good reviews about this specific craft-made year, but couldn’t find anything. Has anyone tried one of these and could share their thoughts?
I’ll of course play it before buying, but it’s a bit far from where I live and I don’t want to make the trip only to find it’s not what I’m looking for.
To be clear: what I want is a Fender Precision made with quality wood and good craftsmanship. The idea is to eventually change some parts like pickups and bridge in the future.
I play the Made in Mexico Fender P bass (50s reissue, road worn).
I love it.
The bass you’re looking at has the potential to be amazing.
Japanese made Fenders are some of my favorite instruments I’ve played.
Having said that - you’ll know when you play it.
If it feels right and plays well, it’s worth it.
I’m trusting you about how much the bass costs and if it’s a good deal or not.
But it certainly has the potential to be a great bass.
@tonyinlow - I have the Made in Mexico version of this very bass, right down to the color. Fender Classic Series 50s replica made in 2008. Super solid bass, great tone, plays great. It was my first bass back after a 30 year hiatus. I played all that they had at Guitar Center and got to this one in the used section and could tell right out of the gate that it had to be mine. Play-ability is awesome. You won’t be sorry. I found info on it via Fender’s lookup site but the link I had is dead- mine is Model 0131702306 though.
That’s going to be a nice instrument. If it’s a Fender Japan 2006 model it should be a “Crafted in Japan” instrument manufactured by either Tokai or Dyna, both of which are high quality manufacturers. You should check it out if possible but I think it’s one you can have confidence in.
It is about triple the price I would expect but yeah, local markets differ.
Like @gio I play a Fender Mexican P Bass. I’ve tried higher tier P Bass Fenders over the years and TBH they’re all pretty much the same. It’s just two bits of wood bolted together. They’re all made with the same CNC machine.
I’d buy a cheaper Mexican P Bass and use the saved money to change out parts if you wanted to. YMMV.
