First 50 Metal Songs You Should Play on Bass

Wanna get from metal beginner to badass? Here are the first 50 metal bass lines you should learn.

50 First Metal - A Variant

If you’re doing the Beginner to Badass course, you should be able to play at least the first 30 songs without too much trouble once you’ve finished the course. No promises on the rest, Cowboys From Hell still breaks my fingers half the time. :stuck_out_tongue:

What metal song would YOU learn first if you could start over? :metal:

Quite the list in there… a couple of those I have under the belt already

Probably Anastasia - Slash / Myles Kennedy

That chugs!

So happy to see White Zombie on that list, with the song I gifted myself my second bass after getting it down half decently.

In hindsight, I should have started with something easier. But I was so proud when I at least got the main parts down (still struggling with the part during the guitar solo).

I like when you do this style of video and the thought you put into the different levels. Its inspiring to see a good mix of songs that are actually attainable and plenty of challenges too. I’m going to get after Wasted Years now :metal:

Other video highlights: the air drum fills and Black No. 1!

Black No. 1 was the first tab I looked up after I bought my bass a month-ish ago. It’s level 2 here, so a little further off than I thought it might be but not too far.

(Ok, it was the first real tab I looked up. The absolute first one was War Pigs, just so I could play that two note riff on the right notes…)

3:23 in and Unsung by Helmet made the list!!! Lovvveeesss that jam.

@JoshFossgreen thanks for making a list of hard, dark, rocking, bass jammers. Most people would have just stuck to straight “metal” artists.

You might get some, “um well technically that’s industrial” or whatever comments, but this list rocks.

Also thank you for introducing me to my 2nd Rammstein song  and +1 for the amazing bass faces for so many of the songs.

5/5 very dark bananas - would recommend!

When I got my first bass, the sales tech asked who I liked on bass and I said Ian Hill.

Little known, Kerry King played bass in the studio on every Slayer album since the early 90s

I love this one, Helmet was just so badass. Unsung and Milquetoast used to be on my mix tape of hype music for hockey and lacrosse games.

Black No 1 at only level 2? It’s all fun and games till you get to the chords. I still can’t get those at speed (cleanly).

I love songs where the bass and guitar match up but the guitar sits behind the bass and drums. Helmet and RATM were always pretty good for that. Audioslave too.

Awesome, so many awesome songs, including some I haven’t heard of before, so some new music :metal:

For me, one of the challenges as a noob (I’m still one) is feeling that songs are too difficult to play at my current level. These ‘50’ series are great to help guide beginners.

Does Josh or one of the BassBuzz crew usually create the Spotify playlist or is that a forum member?

50!!! OMG!! 2 is 1 more than I can handle. And it would be a stretch to come up with 1 worth listening to, let alone wanting to learn to play.
Oh… I forgot to add… IMHO.

I’m not much of a metal head anymore, but ill think I’ll learn at least some of these for the technique and chops workout.

I really hope you do another Best of Bass in 2024 Spotify playlist like you did last year! I learned of some new songs that way. Would be cool to go beyond just rock this time, but you do you man!

Some great tracks, and epic bass face
Assumption time, and we all know what assuming does. It looks like Josh has responded to some community feedback, in which some folks found it difficult to see where he’s fretting during the lessons. He’s defiled his beloved Peavey Cirrus with fret marker stickers. You wouldn’t think he would go through such trouble if he didn’t have some amazing lessons in the hopper. For the record, I face great difficulties in applying and removing stickers. I’ll concede that it may not be a universal struggle.

Edit I completely missed that this is a five string, pointed out by Tim below. So not the original Peavey. No defiling, no stickers…

So much inspiration here :star_struck:

I re-discovered Type O Negative recently, so definitely need to give Black No. 1 a try. Plus I’m on a Helmet kick, so Unsung is going on my list. I just need to practice playing with my bass by my knees now.

10/10 for bassface strength and variety @JoshFossgreen :ok_hand:

Hey, return of the Peavey! And a five-string version no less!

Have you ever played a fiver in a BassBuzz video before, @JoshFossgreen?

This list is the most legit possible simply because Tenacious D landed #1. #approved!

Minor nit though, you misspelled “F*ckin’ Slayer!”

Seriously thanks for working in Deftones, made me happy.
