First 50 Metal Songs You Should Play on Bass

Yeah, like Deftones - not purist metal but much much better.

There are some who will flip at Metallica because they sold out with the Black album. There are elitists that have not yet accepted Brian Johnson replacing Bon Scott.

Any metal list gets this. @JoshFossgreen welcome to my world and you’re in good company.

If bass players weren’t posting and saying awkward sh** we wouldn’t be bass players.

Love you man! Solid list! Haters gonna hate, buzzers gonna buzz!

Not bad - IMO some of them are not really metal (NIN?) but I guess we couldn’t have had 50 Black Sabbath tracks on the list.

Still, a 50 song challenge I can get behind if anyone’s interested  :metal:

I’ve got a question for you metalheads out there.

Why do y’all call the dotted-eighth sixteenth rhythm a gallop when it’s really a canter? :joy:

I had to look up what canter even is. But I think you are onto something

Wow that’s really cool! There’s more going on in a gallop than I realized. Thanks for sharing those!

Oh, and I’m being tongue-in-cheek here (although I do think it’s more a canter than a gallop). I’m not dissing on metal. I used to LOVE metal, and can still get into it. I also have nothing but respect for metal bass players, as that shit seems HARD to play. I don’t know that I could ever play quite a few of those riffs in the video.

Back to the video, I loved the comment on the Metallica song. Something like, “Is this even metal? Who’s to say, but they have METAL in their name, so that’s enough for me.” Really cracked me up.

Metal is going something of an identity crisis. The old guard headliners (Priest, Metallica, Maiden, Slayer etc, pretty much the bands in Josh’s video) are grandparents, and the new guard (Ghost, Spiritbox, Sleep Token, Babymetal, Nightwish) are very different sounds of metal. I mean, Babymetal and Bloodywood released a single last week with lyrics in 3 languages, and no one batted an eye. The landscape is shifting and the purists don’t like it.

I saw a post on X asking why Trance DJs are calling their music “melodic techno”. Hopefully rock genres don’t get as nuts as EDM genres.

Math core? :man_shrugging:

What’s next “Geometric,Finish, Post -Screemo NuMetal”?

All of that is old school, it’s moved on to kawaii core and Harajuku core (two different genres they say)

Harajuku core - see my What are you listening to post a couple days ago of Hanabie

You misspelled emo jazz

There is actually another term for it not far from that but I forget what it is
