So I am new to the hobby of bass playing (never really played but always had an interest) I am a teen so kinda tight to cash
For my first bass I am looking for the Yamaha TRBX174 it has PJ pickups if I’m not wrong and if kinda touching the roof of my budget but for all that I’ve heard on reddit and other forums I feel it is the perfect first bass
I am not getting an amp at this time as I live in an apartment so I shall be getting the vox amplug
Anyways will get the bass next year cause till March of next year I am swamped. Came here asking is it a good first pick for someone who is completely clueless? And other lower priced versatile basses
That was my first headphone amp. It was NOT good. Here are the 3 that I have now. I can recommend any one of the 3. Note that these videos use guitars, but all 3 work well with basses.
Just a side option… I’m really new at this and I’m not sure what others would think about my headphone amp, but my good friend who got me into this bought me an m-Vave Tank Mini multi-effects unit on Temu for around $40 USD. It acts as a headphone amp with lots of effects, presets, and you can download other people’s settings. It also acts as an audio interface if you plug a USB C cable between it and your phone. Then you can record yourself using Band Lab or whatever. It has a tuner, a looper, whole bunch of stuff. I really like it.
An alternative is the Joyo BA-30. @andrea-slndr has one and will post an extensive review, when she feels better! It’s a speaker with some simple effects, headphone out and even a simple DAI. It should be perfect for a start. 79€, just saying!
I also ordered one…
Another alternative is the Zoom AMS-24 or Zoom AMS-22. It has no effects nor Bluetooth, but it’s a great, portable and durable DAI.
If you are not in a hurry to get a bass, you can take your time, watch videos, go to the stores and try different models. I bought as my first bass a Squier jazz bass (a bass teacher recommended it), as it is a little easier and more comfortable to play for beginners. The neck is narrower than a P bass. I have never tried a PJ bass, but it could be a good choice.
Sometimes people get very good deals buying used basses, but it is good to know what you’re buying won’t need repairing. If you decide to buy an used one, if possible have with you a friend who plays bass and who can check the instrument for you, to see everything’s OK.
I live in an apartment, so I decided to buy a headphone amp. I watched YouTube reviews, and decided on a Boss Katana Go. It is very good, but it is more expensive than the Vox. I have never used a Vox so I can’t say anything about it, but some people like it, so it can’t be that bad.
An alternative to it could be a small amplifier that can be used with headphones too. I bought the Joyo BA-30, and it was an inexpensive amp. But it costs probably double the price of a Vox.
But if you are just starting and the budget is tight, the Vox would do just fine. Later you can sell it and buy something else. I think we all start somewhere, and we don’t need to start out with the most expensive things. There will be time for that later.
I didn’t plan on making an extensive review, but you can help with that when your Joyo arrives. But there are very good video reviews on this amp on YouTube, by people much more qualified than me. I have never had this kind of amp (just a headphone amp, the Katana Go) so yesterday I rewatched some videos just to see how the different settings affect the sound, so I kind of know what is probably the best EQ settings to try first. I haven’t tried it yet.
