I can’t believe I forgot to come back here and say thanks to Josh for the B2B course on the occasion of playing my first gig!
I flew back home to Detroit this last Halloween to play a show with some friends: an all -acoustic Misfits / Samhain tribute set. This was a paid gig on stage with all the bells and whistles - and we absolutely killed!
The show was not without some substantial challenges: we all had to practice remotely, and we only actually heard ourselves together at our only rehearsal the day before. As I mentioned, this was an acoustic set, which meant playing an acoustic bass (happily, this was more of an electro-acoustic set, which meant people could actually hear me). On top of that? The bass was borrowed - I have a couple of electrics, but had to borrow an acoustic.
Nevertheless: we had a great show, I held my own with the band (all experienced stage performers with 20+ years experience), and developed a real taste for live performance.
If you’re reading this and just starting out, let me say that the B2B program is going to get you into gigging shape fast.
To be fair: I was not a total newbie coming into this program - I already played guitar and trumpet, and I have done a bit of music theory study (enough to know my minors from majors, my modes from scales, Nashville, cirlce of fifths, etc).
But: the daily, structured, directed practice was HUGE. B2B kept me focused and working. I learned some riffs, devloped dexterity, trained my ear, and made my practice and noodling fun and productive (versus boring and frustrating) respectively.
So like it says in the header: Thanks, Josh!
