Flat wound vs round wound strings

How about we delete them both, start over and see if we come to a different conclusion?

Yeah! Maybe we can get some original questions like P bass VS J bass, :joy:

Wow the rounds on my SBV are dead. Like really dead, deader sounding than any flats I have heard. This is with a pick, even:

Time to change them.

Just dug in the parts drawer and the only ones I have on hand are some Elixir Nanowebs. Now I love Elixirs on guitar, and I have had them on a bass before, but I am not sure I want them for the SBV.

I could order my standards - NYXLs or EXLs - but this might be a good chance to try something new. For rounds, T-I are too expensive I think (need to recheck). Could do DR’s, I like the Hi-Beams on guitar, hmm. I think I will think about this a bit.

TI Jazz Rounds are superb and so worth the money. I’ve had mine on my two Mayones for months, and they’re still going strong.

That said, DR Pure Blues are just great. Equally, SIT Foundations are fantastic. And both of these are a quarter of the cost of my fave TI Jazz Rounds.

There’s a whole round-core thing going on with all of these. But I’d go with TI Jazz Rounds for sublime feel and tone, all day long.

Needless to say, but I’ll say it again, YMMV.

I’d second what @MikeC said: TIs, Pure Blues or actually also the Nanowebs, are all really awesome strings

That said, I get the “horses for courses” argument, and not all strings are for all basses

Yeah I do like the Elixirs, just feeling the need for more bright right now for some reason.

T-I tempt me. I am a little scared of liking them because damn thats steep. Still…

If you want bright-bright, then you don’t have to worry about TI Jazz Rounds. They’re not that. They are far more akin to superior NYXL tone and most definitely feel, plus they last longer.

If price point is the deciding factor, then go for DR Pure Blues. They are also not super-bright, but they’re damn fine strings. That said, to my ear, they’re a lot brighter than Elixirs.

I put the Stringjoy roundwounds back on my Bass VI last night.
I didn’t get to play as much as I wanted to but I was happy.
It is now bright and zingy and sounds like it needs to be tamed

Well I remember why I changed from rounds to flats on the Bass VI.
I kind of like it but it is really too zingy for what I play, I almost wish I had a 2nd to keep in rounds (yes I have been pondering a build, Hmmm cricket bat VI).
I put on the set of flats that Pyramid made for me (very helpful guys them) but I have only had a chance to play quietly on the small amp upstairs, I’ll give them a proper go tonight and at tomorrow’s jam.
They feel different to the LaBella ones I had on, I think the ribbon is narrower and they feel almost silky. They sound good so far.
The best bit is that they are the proper length for the Harley Benton Bass VI (as I said they made them for me).
The flat winding ends just short of the Bottom E post, and the post winding part is sort of ‘braided’.
What we are playing is a setlist of CCR, KISS, Black Sabbath, Johhny Winter, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd (prolly stay with the fretless for Hey You), Billy Idol and The Cult. So there is a bit of tonal variation there which the Bass VI covers nicely (with lipstick pickups  )

Hi @MikeC Do I read correctly from a number of your posts on TI round wound Jazz strings that you purchase the 36” scale length (.101, .75, .55, .43) strings and then cut them to fit your 34” scale bass?

Yep, I use TI Jazz Rounds (JR364). They’re great.

@MikeC I finally got around to re-stringing with the TI JR364 and OMG, those are so nice! Super smooth and warm. They also made me realize my crap slap sound was partly due to worn out strings, and the rest is just me not having spent any time practicing it. Thanks for the recommendation.

Very cool! Glad you dig the TI Super Longs. They are killers, for sure.

I snagged three sets during Black Friday sales.

Anyone put flats on a 5 string? For some reason it just seems wrong in my head but kinda want to try.

Well, if you have a fretless 5-string and like the sound/feel of flats (and are afraid that rounds might eat your fingerboard).

It’s just sound and feels. No right or wrong
