Looking forward to it. ![]()
I keep forgetting that Marcus Miller is so much more than ‘just’ a bass player! Great concert! Thanks for posting!
you could really say that his first solo album was really, ‘Takin’ off’ at the time! ![]()
2 hours south of me, in San Sebastian, Spain. Mike Pratt on bass and the inimitable Bill Bruford on drums.
Go for it! I mean, who would have thought to see this maestro behind a kit again??
Horace Ward Martin Tavares Silver. What a talent! Thanks for sharing this classic, @MikeC . Great trumpet solo by Bill Hardman. Made my morning!
When Song for My Father appeared in one of the B2B lessons, I paused the course and went off to play along to the Horace Silver group for about two weeks straight. That’s when I started to think, “hey, I am playing jazz! I’m a bass player now!”
Yeah, good one. A few years old now, but “Spirit Fingers” has interesting players and intricate music.
That’s still one of my favourite covers. Technically easy bassline but so fun to play; I just keep coming back to it.
Tightness.
Impressed by the bassist; totally in the groove but nothing fancy. Just giving the solid foundation. Good stuff. Not so sure about the guy on the right with the tambourine and one finger on one key on the keyboard. (oh I tell a lie he did play another note later on and then the camera zoomed in on it
). As you say, though, a really good tight funk sound.
The bass player is Hagar Ben-Ari. She is a stone-cold killer bassist. For its 8-year run, she created the groove hard in the house band for The Late Late Show with James Corden. I marveled at her expert playing every night.
Her playing is definitely not attention-grabbing, but it is deceptive in its underlying complexity and grace as every great jazz session player’s technique and stage presence (think Ron Carter, etc.).
She hails from Israel and is a much sought-after player who’s playing is worth watching and listening to closely: her bass lines and command of the pocket are extraordinary. If you have some time, you might want to take a look at the video a few times. Great stuff. ![]()
Yeah I was very impressed and did a bit of searching and found out about her. Being a Brit, I’d never seen her on TV.
Her name caught my eye because we used to have a newspaper comic strip in the UK called Hagar the Horrible who was a hairy Viking! So I was trying to work out how a female bassist could have the same name ![]()
Awesome. And thanks for the GAS…now I want a Guild Bass. Very cool.
