For Theory Junkies

Moving into Module 12, I realized in B2B Josh is giving us a great course in practical applied music theory: what we need and can use where we are in learning.

If you are deep into theory, and want to learn details and the arcane language of music theorists, I recommend a relatively new course from The Great Courses, “Music Theory: The Foundation of Great Music.” This is a university level theory course in 18 half-hour lessons, taught by a professor with full demos from students and faculty at his university.

The lesson I watched today is about tonal harmony, and explains tonic, dominant, pre-dominant and subdominant chords, using Bach to demonstrate. Watching the demo an discussion, I immediately thought, “Hey! That’s a 1-5-4-6 sequence!”

You can buy the one course for $24, (marked down from $40), but I highly recommend subscribing because I guarantee you will find other courses on a wide range of topics that wil pull you in. The top level Great Courses Plus subscription is $150/year; I have been on this one for five years and love it.
