Fretting hand wrist pain

Hi everyone.

I am starting to develop some fretting hand wrist/forearm pain when rotating it.

Made a little video to show when it happens and hoping anyone has some advice for me to try. (volume is a bit low… I hate talking to a camera!)

I did read some of the other wrist pain related threads but it sounded like different issues.

Im not a doctor, nor am i a good bassist. So take it with a grain of salt. It looks like you have the bass positioned pretty far off center in relation to your body. That makes your fretting hand tuck into your bod. Try getting the body of the bass more centered to your body. That will change the angle your of your wrist. I play with a strap both sitting and standing. For me, it keeps tue bass in the same general area. I also like the neck positioned kinda high. Try both to see if one works for you.

I have wrist pain and much the same issue. I went with short scale in the end as extending my arm really exasperated the pain.

Here’s something you can try on your gorgeous Yammy. Tune all the strings down a full tone. Then place a capo on fret 2. Fret 3 will then the same as old fret 1, open notes will be the same, and in essence you made a short scale out of your 34" bass.

See if that helps.

If you are new to bass then it happens to everyone take 2 Aleves and it gets better over time.

You can also try to tilt up the neck, the more vertical the easier to the wrist, think class guitar angle. There’s a bit further reach for right hand but it will be more comfortable.

That’s a great idea! I’ll give it a shot.

i have wrist problems with tendonitis, i only play standing up with a decent guitar strap 3 inches wide and the neck pointing quite upright, this works for me and i play a 34 -36 multiscale , playing sat down is uncomfortable as the stretch is too far

Interesting.
I never paid attention to the difference between sitting or standing.
I ha e been playing more sitting recently…

I pretty much only play standing. I find it far more comfortable, plus it avoids the tendency to ‘hunch’ over the bass when sitting.

I was the same way for years, always played standing; for the last few years though it’s been sitting for me.
