FRFR

I have a Rumble 100, but I just bought an HX stomp which I am really enjoying. I have a nice amp/cab set up and considered running it through the return on the Fender, but it colors my sound. I have considered an FRFR speaker. Has anyone used this solution? If so, what did you get? If not, what was your solution to amp/cab running into an amp?

This can get technical quickly. I like Amp with no color like Genzler but not really vibing with the Flat response speaker stuffs. What are you hoping to get in the FRFR?

Well running it through the return with the cab blocks on changes what I hear from just my headphones. I assume cause the fender (being a cab) has it’s own sound. Running a 8x10 cab sim into a 1x12 actual box is not unexpected that the sound would be different. It did however sound a bit more muddy than I was expecting. I suppose I could turn off the cab block, but then I’ve lost some of what I’ve come to like in my headphones. So I guess I am hoping that an FRFR speaker would keep the same tone as my chain. Though if there are other ways to mitigate the sound differences, I am all ears. Pardon the expression. I am by no means an expert at any of this stuff, but it has been nice to see from my limited research so far, that what I’ve experienced is common. However, not really found a good solution except just removing the amp/cab sim and just using the amp and perhaps to tweak and hope.

Which Genzler?

If you run your HX Stomp into the effects return you bypass the pre amp section and go straight to the power section. The pre amp is the part what colours the sound. Unless I’ve misunderstood the diagram.

10-2 array Combo. Well I have 2 heads and 3 cabs to play with. Genzler is known for reproducing your bass sound and not their signature sound which comes in handy if you own multiple bass.

I guess you are talking about live performance setup. I’m not big in cab sim as they usually have some weird timbre. The effects I prefer, besides the wet ones are envelope and maybe some drives I don’t even like compressor, why practice so much to develop the finger tone and dynamic then wipe it away with effects.

I do this with studio monitors and it works fine. All monitors and most PA’s will be flat response so don’t feel like you need to spend extra for something marketed as FRFR.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I am now experimenting more with the FX return on the Fender and playing with the cab block on the stomp. I think that is going to be the solution so far. I am not one who likes to fiddle all day, I want to play, not tweak. If I can dial in something close, then that will be good….till it’s not.

This is correct, just like monitors and PAs.

Running a cab sim on headphones makes sense because they act as flat monitors.

In my experience, I’d rather not use cab sims into a return amp because the cab is already a cab. Fiddling with some pre amp sims is cool, though.

Exactly!

I use a PA with cab/amp sims, and can make the PA sound like anything else.
A friend of mine (professional bass player) visited me some time ago. He is an old fashioned guy, having all kinds of “real” tube amps and very expensive classic cabs.

He is not a digital guy, but was very impressed how I could change the character of my PA to some of the gear he knew … and sound very close to the original.

He had his WTF moment … but still likes the analog gear more, cause he wants to feel the weight of stuff and fumble real knobs [insert knob joke here]…
